Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

Barkley said:

If this is actually accurate and holds true it would be unusual.

The first 2 years of 1st party XBO:

XBO Exclusive

Forza 5
Killer Instinct
Ryse Son of Rome
Zoo Tycoon
Project Spark
Sunset Overdrive
Halo MCC
Ori and the Blind Forest
State of Decay Year One
Rare Replay
Gears of War Ultimate
Forza 6
Halo 5

360+XBO

Forza Horizon 2

Only one of their games was on both 360 and XBO.

I'm not sure if this is a wise move or not.

Zoo Tycoon, Forza Horizon 2 and a Fantasia game came to 360. There was also that furtuistic rollercoaster physics game.

There was also smaller stuff like the Halo Spartan game, Lococycle, some Mojang game I cant remember and Minecraft story games.

State of Decay was a port and Halo MCC was mostly 360 content. Halo 2 being the exception.

Gears Ultimate was virtually the same game with next gen visuals.

So your list neglects a lot. But the big difference is essentially promising AAA content.

Where were these supposed Xbox fans talking wait and see at the start of this gen? Not here. Is this some random Xbox user you follow on Instagram or something? 😆

Also what else is he supposed to say other than let’s wait and see? There aren’t any games confirmed except Halo and Hellblade 🤡

What games will Sony have exclusive for PS5? Idk, well have to wAiT aNd SeE

Globally in the US?  🐼

It's not an unsound move. Though a lot depends on what Sony has during that timeframe, and whether MS games are going to be held back by older architecture.

Again, 9th gen could be treated as the lead while scaled back ports are developed for X1. Realistically that would only be about six AAA games over two years.

However, I am starting to wonder if this means Lockhart won't happen. The X1 and X1X might stick around for a bit as budget hardware.

If so, it would be a bad idea for MS to release a new console more expensive than PS5.

On a side note I think we are seeing Sony fans actually attacking MS for supporting a console too long. Historically Sony fans did the opposite.

I have big hunch that the Lockhart is just a xbox one x slim. With rdna 2 4tflops of it could match 6tflops of gcn

A lot of wait and see coming from Xbox fans since the start of the 8th gen. Now we start the 9th in the same track.

There were new IPs and more importantly something big happen near the end of the 8th gen, numerous studios being purchased. Some of which that have experience making AAA games.

That and Game Pass became a thing. A service that thrives on new content to gain subscribers.

Hence, we wait and saw things happen.

A lot of things have happened then and you telling me none of it came to fruittion and we are still waiting until 9th gen to see if it will show any possitive result?

I like long console cycles, so something like this is a good thing for me. because of the rising pc support, I got my ps4 just recently and I still barely use it, not really looking forward to getting a ps5 for a long time, every crossgen exlusive is a big plus for me. I love the 3ds and it's long support over the years, I still prefer it over the switch and there were games which I rather played on the 3ds.

It seems their long-term plans are for Xbox to be a gaming service platform, no matter where you play. I do think this upcoming Xbox will be the last, mid-gen refreshes won't change that.
This doesn't affect me as I don't have an Xbox One, and I have no intention of getting Xbox Series X.

Kinda looks like it. It seems MS is more interested in having people play their games on Xone and budget gaming pc's than pushing the visuals of the Series X. Sounds like a bad idea, especially if Sony drops a couple of 1st party games that push gaming to a new level.

Not very smart in my opinion. It most likely means that they'll be starting with Xbox One S and working their way up. It already was reported that some devs didn't like developing for Lockhart and Series X. I can't imagine 1st party studios being too happy with also having to develop for an outdated piece of tech instead of moving on to next-gen fully like most of Sony's 1st party studios are.

Well for starters it was just a rumor. Secondly lol if you don’t believe devs will be making games cross gen for years as is the case every gen.

I suppose you can chalk it up to just being a rumor, but it was put forth by someone who has contacts in the gaming industry.

And yea, there will be cross-gen games.  And they are the ones that don't look all that impressive when compared to games made with the new HW exclusively in mind.  You will be getting very similar geometry, the game running at a higher resolution/framerate, with maybe a few bells and whistles thrown in.  It will not be a night and day difference.

If they are changing the specs and it plays actual 9th gen Xbox content, then its a lower end console. Not a X1X slim.

But I assume the Lockhart would need to match specs of a X1X for high fidelity Xbox One backward compatibility. That would mean has lots of 4K content at launch

You're assuming supporting X1 and pushing graphics at the same time is mutually exclusive.

Visuals are the generally the easiest aspect to scale back, refer to Switch. You can have great looking content running on vastly inferior specs. Look at Wolfenstein II on X1X vs Switch. Somehow that great looking shooter works on a portable with a small fraction of power.

Am I the only one thinking about existing comparisons?

The most impressive launch game this gen was Ryse and gameplay/design was it was all possible on last gen hardware. In fact it originated as a Kinect title. There was nothing particularly special about Killzone 7 or Knack. DR3 had an impressive number of zombies on screen considering the scope of the game and the detail but it was nothing jaw dropping. I don’t remember Forza 5 being anything more than a prettier Forza.

It takes a year or two for truly impressive stuff to start to show and hey in a year after launch this supposed ban on XSX exclusives will be lifted so, yay? Also I’m not sure why this is news, MS has been saying this for awhile.

PS5 and XSX launch will be full of prettier versions of the same stuff we can play right now, even the exclusive stuff. Same as almost every gen. In fact, when was the last time something truly mind blowing launched with a console? Halo? Geometry and design wise it blew the previous gen away and then it also had incredible AI.
