A lot of the Fire Emblem fanbase dug itself a hole with the complaints about the three campaigns before the release of Fates. They decided that they couldn't go back on that and kept hating despite Fates being easily the best Fire Emblem on the 3DS. Although not as good overall as Fire Emblem (GBA), Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.

Anyway, since the nutjobs among the Fire Emblem fanbase value story over gameplay (as seen by the love for Shadows of Valentia which was comfortably the worst Fire Emblem game released in America and Europe), Three Houses is bound to get rated highly by them.

I can't speak for the online fanbase, because I don't care enough about Fire Emblem to go looking for people's opinions, but from the people I know, everyone was really hyped for Fire Emblem Fates pre-release, and ended up disappointed after playing it, and especially after playing Echoes.

Fates was my favorite game in the series.  I freaking loved everything about it!  Experiencing the campaign from different perspectives to managing your home base to playing against other people’s castles.  There was nothing but good with fates!

Awakening is 92 and it is the highest rated FE game.

The Graphics/texture and frame rate issues should be the main issues of the game from what I've seen.

Going by what I've read on some reviews, it has more to do with the combat being too easy and simple. It appears that easy and normal difficulties are so accesible that many people turn on automatic battles because it hardly makes a difference between that and playing by yourself. Apparently the triangle weapon system is gone, and with it, the combat has become kind of a joke on easy and normal difficulties. Hard is the way to go even if you suck at these games.

Yeah I heard many people recommending to do Hard and besides you can always lower it down. The removal of the traingle weapon will be interesting to see.

I think Fates had the best map and scenario design of the series, but its story was pretty disappointing, the characters were not well-handled compared to previous games, and the children and extra-dimensional base just didn't mesh with the rest of the game at all. It was both a step forward and a step backward. Awakening may be considered simple by FE story standards, but the way the mechanics, themes, characters, and story came together in that game make it one of those few games where the story and gameplay perfectly compliment each other and enhance each other, and ensure that I keep coming back to it every year. These reviews make me feel that Three Houses might be able to recapture that magic touch that made Awakening so appealing.and have its various elements compliment each other again. We'll see tomorrow.

I believe, haven't played it, it was replaced with weapon arts. Weapon arts are tied to weapon durability, which is suppose to add another layer of strategy. Of so I've read.

Color me surprised, i didn't think it would score so high.

I'm 5 hours in at the moment - undoubtedly my favourite Fire Emblem ever already. The characters are fantastic, the story progression is solid, the side activities and missions are great. Zero complaints at all so far.

Fantastic reviews, I'm really considering to get this as my first Fire Emblem, but before doing that I want to read impressions from fans of the series (Switch games are overpriced in my country so I have to be picky :P)

Odd, I was told by a VG expert that FE 3 Houses was lazy and uninspired.

"The saddest part about this is that two of those games have been received quite poorly by their fanbase and are seen as unambitious cash grabs"

Lol.

I wonder who would've said that.

By the way, a lot of the Fire Emblem fanbase hates Fates, and it had a similar critical reception.

Edit: and even more by the way, Pokémon Sword/Shield will get a 86 metascore. It doesn't change the fact that it's been received poorly by the fanbase and is an unambitious cash grab.

Sword and Shield won’t get a 86. The last Pokémon game got a 79. It’s been going downward in scores,

For anyone who has played it long enough, what was the reason for removing the weapon triangle? Does something replace it?

They replace it through combat arts. Like using a certain combat art makes you weapom strong against another weapon type. But using combat arts uses a lot more durability on your weapon.

Like on the tutorial I did the combat art gives higher damage but uses 3 durability.

Let's Go was a spinoff/remake though.

I see Sword and Shield getting 77-84. But that's just based on what I've seen so far. There could be other elements in the game that offset the lazy animations, lack of a full dex, etc. Slim chance, I know.

Sometimes people decide what score a game should get before anybody has even gotten a chance to play the thing. It is important not to do that.
