Summary for September 2018

The Google spreadsheet with all collected data can be viewed here.

We've had a couple of special cases this month. Firstly, the physical release of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 expansion that goes by the name of Torna ~ The Golden Country. The physical version of this DLC can only count as its own game, because it works as a standalone without the necessity to own the main game XC2. While the digital version of this DLC stacks with XC2, therefore doesn't have its own icon in the Switch menu and doesn't pass all checks to count as its own game, I've decided that the more sensible course of action is to also count it as a separate game. For one, it might seem unfair to count the physical version but not the digital one, and two, I already had to create the columns in the spreadsheet, so they might as well be used. It's hard to draw a definitive line in this case, but I think this is the preferable solution.

Secondly, Dragon Ball Fighters Z had a digital copy of a SNES game as a preorder bonus. Bandai-Namco has confirmed that Butoden will not be made available as individual purchase on the eShop, so this puts it in a gray zone. However, to the best of my knowledge, the Butoden download creates a separate icon in the Switch menu, so it's not merely a part of Fighters Z. That's why Butoden will count as its own game, essentially a gift by Bandai-Namco to early purchasers, in the spreadsheet despite its lack of an individual purchase option.

The overall tie ratio passes the mark of 20, but that's about it for this month. The all-time low of games added that was set last month was comfortably beaten with barely any activity registered during the last 30 days.

The lack of new members in September results in a stand-still for the top half of the table; no changes in number of times owned nor position, or really any stats. There are only three games that have any gains. Tropical Freeze takes sole possession of 12th place, Mario Tennis moves up one spot, Torna ~ The Golden Country has a strong debut with double digit ownership. September's second first party release, the Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit, completely fails to register in the spreadsheet.

October sees the release of Super Mario Party where Nintendo is trying to convince gamers that digital is better by offering 10% cashback instead of the usual 5%. We'll see if that makes any difference.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.
