Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Tecmo Koei Posts $20M loss. Blames wii

Haven't they made a bunch of HD "Musou" games?

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Where do they actually blame the Wii and not the game? :/.

Anyone putting this at the Wii's door as the main reason (including the company, if they do, which I don't think is the case) is full of it. Samurai Warriors is a series in decline - SW1 sold over 1 million in Japan on the PS2 in 2004, SW2 sold already 570k in 2006, and since then (in the spirit of music games such as GH), the company has done everything to dilute the franchise with offshoots with lackluster sales.

Samurai Warriors 3 has sold so far over 250k and is still selling a little. So if its sales are not as expected (even though they are more than Famitsu expected), how much did the company expect it to sell in that same period? Let's say a still unrealistic 500k? That would be another 250k games.
250k x $20 (the company's estimated cut per game) is $5 million. Yet the full yearly profit forecast was lowered from 82 million dollars to 2 million dollars. What does such a sum have to do with 5 million dollars less sales? Nothing much. Same case with the 20 million dollars loss, 5 million is not that much out of it, especially since they were looking to profit, not break even. Even if we'd go as far as say they expected to sell a million (in their dreams, on any platform), that would still not explain the loss (since, again, they were looking to profit, not break even), not to mention the 80 milion less is expected yearly profits...

@Words of Wisdom, they did make HD console games, that had a very nice part in their downfall as well. They just hoped the SW3 sales will cover their asses, and it didn't...

Bad management decisions.
Bad gaming decisions.
Bad profit outlook.

Anyone can tell you, if they look rather than listen to analysts, that sequels do not sell as well on the Wii as they have traditionally on other systems. (Particularly to series that have been played out for years.) Yet people still try.

The wiired article does, as some other articles (to a lesser extent) do.

But Tecmo Koei don't... unlike what the thread title says.

The whole things seems to be poorly translated anyway, this samurai ninja game thing isn't the main blame they have apparently. Just one of a variety.

The thread title is the wiired article title. The wiired article writer obviously purposefully took just the Wii angle and made it the entire thing. I agree that to the company it was just one out of a variety of factors mentioned.

when in doubt, blame the Wii

Going to the source and trying to have google translate, it says the main reason is "struggling Onraigemu" with poor sales of Samurai Warriors 3 as a secondary reason.  Anyways, based on the translation (not that computers can be trusted for such things), no where did I see the Wii being blamed by the publisher, only by the article putting words in the publisher's mouth...

Whis is Onraigemu?

On Rail game? I have no clue....

OT:

I wonder what else they lost money on. They post a $20m loss so there must be some other failures beside SW3, unless SW3 was super duper expensive. Which I doubt.

Anyway, looking forward to their excuse for the next Musou game not hitting their 1m expectations. This time it'll be harder to blame the Wii. Well, Wii might have some big release the same week, overshadowing the Musou game and thus Tecmo Koei can blame the Wii again

They could do that, as long as they don't remind anyone that SW3 was released 2 weeks before FFXIII .
