Koei Tecmo posted a 1.84 billion yen ($20.4 million) loss in its third quarter, blaming the results on poor Wii sales of Samurai Warriors 3. The publisher's major Wii title, despite star power support from Miyamoto and others, failed to attract Japanese gamers.
The publisher cited poor Wii sales of it's third installment in the Samurai Warriors series, known as Sengoku Musou 3 in Japan. The game launched on December 3 in Japan and Koei Tecmo had stated their plan was for it to be a major title for the Wii. The development team choose to bring the title to Wii in order to reach the largest possible audience.
Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto even attended the Samurai Warriors 3 press conference last August, as the game featured a mode of play based off an old 1986 Famicom Disc System game Nazo no Mura Samejou, of which Miyamoto was the original producer of.
Japanese superstar actor/singer/songwriter Gackt Camui, whose music has been used in titles such as Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus, also performed the theme music, did voice acting, and appeared in commercials for the game.
It appears despite all this star power, Samurai Warriors 3 simply didn't perform as expected.
Samurai Warriors 3 is rumored to be coming to North America soon, although an official launch date is still unknown.
