Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony setting the graphics bar this generation

Well one marked difference between 360 games and PS3 games is that the 360 exclusives like GoW2 and Halo 3 have split screen (with Halo 3 allowing up to 4 players on one 360).

Comparing this to the PS3 exclusive games like Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 which both lack any split screen and for Killzone 2 even co-op makes you wonder how good 360 exclusive games would look if they gave up having local multiplayer features. Not that I would want them to since for me playing next to a friend is always greater than slightly better graphics.

With Halo Reach said to have at the very least the same multiplayer features as Halo 3, looking at its graphics becomes pretty impressive. Pulling off graphics better than GoW2 in huge maps fighting against a massive covenant army with your friend sitting right next to you is no small task.

He just ruins it. Looks horrid compared to that vibrant scenery. I hope it is just a placeholder.

Sony came out of the gate more than a little bruised. With a $600 price tag, a year behind the Xbox 360 and a system with a radically new architecture, Sony has had a hell of an uphill battle this generation. But with the launch of the new slimmer PS3, a price cut and some quality titles, Sony has revitalized the PS3 and has the industry buzzing with positive feedback that looks to extend well into 2010.

While the PS3 has been known to be a nightmare programming wise, Sony’s first party studios are proving that the much talked about Cell in conjunction with Nvidia’s RSX GPU are an amazing combo that is leading the graphical bar this console generation. Last year Sony started off the year with Killzone 2, its 500lb blockbuster fps. Killzone 2 set industry standards for what a fps could look like. Featuring amazing technical prowess and an addicting online multiplayer, Killzone 2 established the franchise as Sony’s goto shooter.

Not to be outdone, Naughty Dog shocked the gaming world with Uncharted 2. Proving once again that creative programming and hard work could wring some amazing results out of the PS3. Uncharted 2 has set the graphical bar for what a next-gen title can look like. Just when gamers think that nothing can possible outdo Uncharted 2, March brings the return of Sony’s heavy hitter Kratos.

This past E3 gamers got a taste of what to expect from Kratos latest quest to kill the gods. Last month Sony held a private event to show off the game in its latest form - and reports are that Sony has once again shown naysayers that the PS3 is a technical beast in the right hands. Exclusive after exclusive Sony’s first party studios are showcasing Sony’s deep investment into the system and proving that the PS3 is set to have a long lifespan.

So where does this leave Microsoft? Microsoft has shown that the 360 is a capable system, but for the most part has left showing the systems true capabilities to its third party support. Something that has gnawed on 360 owners a bit. Yes, Microsoft has Gears of War and Gears of War 2; 2 stellar looking titles that have shown gamers that the 360 has plenty of muscle of its own. With Square-Enix bringing Final Fantasy XIII to the system and Capcom displaying Lost Planet 2, gamers are seeing that the 360 has some serious strength, but is still sorely lacking the graphically pushing titles that Sony’s first parties are cranking out.

2010 at least seems to be pushing a much better effort from Microsoft. Remedy is releasing its action thriller Alan Wake. A title that has been years in the making and will be pushing the 360 like few titles have. Then there’s Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Conviction (again third party) which is shaping up to also highlight the 360’s Xenos GPU’s prowess with amazing lighting and texture work.

Microsoft’s other heavy hitter this year is Halo Reach. Bungie has said that Reach will bend the 360 as far as it can go. With tons of enemies on screen and gorgous visuals, Reach is shaping up to be Microsoft’s first true answer to Killzone 2’s amazing debut last year on the PS3. Even with Microsoft pushing the aging 360, some are still seeing the quality divide between Sony and Microsoft’s platforms - and it’s hard to argue, that Sony truly is setting graphical high bar this generation.

Will Halo Reach, Alan Wake and Splinter Cell be enough to appease graphics fanatics on the 360 this year? Odds are yes, but Sony is proving that with a little sweat and elbow grease the PS3 is the graphical king this generation. Let’s see what a little elbow grease and sweat can do for the 360 this year.

Ok so?

Thats what I want to see from future games on the Playstation 3. I enjoy great graphics, but a splitscreen/co-op experience IMO is way better than having better graphics. It adds more replay value to the game and more fun when playing with friends/family. Halo: Reach looks REALLY good for a game thats suppose to have an even better online experience than Halo 3. That being said, I know Sony developers can do that too and would like to see that.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Uncharted 2 with split screen multiplayer/co-op would be so much fun. We can hope for Uncharted 3 though huh

Thats what I'm hoping for, I know Guerilla Games said they are considering adding Splitscreen to Killzone 3, the Killzone 2 engine supposedly couldn't support Splitscreen. If Uncharted 3 had that, it would be ridiculously fun.

oh man. This PS3 vs X360 gfx thing needs to stop.

It still amazes me how much people assume the PS3 is insanely more powerful than the 360. Over all, the PS3 is more powerful. But the gap is much more subtle, unlike the original Xbox vs PS2 (look at God of War II vs. Ninja Gaiden. Clear difference)

Go check out techno buffalo on youtube. YThese guys are super super techy and they break down the GPU and CPU of each console.

Basically, 360 has a more efficient GPU (not necessarily "better") than the PS3,
and the PS3 has more additional processors than the 360 does, but the Cell works differently than a tri core.

And really, who cares. Both sytstems have amazing games with awesome graphics.

As far as I'm concerned, MGS for PS1 was amazing in graphics processing...and even to this day it is remarkable what they did at the time.

Exactly what I wanted to point out as well, sure Killzone 2 is touted as the graphics king of the time setting the bar up along with Uncharted 2 but at the cost of having a buddy sit on the couch with you and experience coops and add to more friends and enjoy online multiplayer together!

Seeing how Bungie came out to talk that all the screenshots we've been seeing pop up from ebgames and other sources are all off the November 2009 Alpha build of the engine only telling me we have yet to see the true finished product polish. Bungie also brought up an interesting point that the new assault rifle has as many polygons as a whole marine model from Halo 3 (Alpha build has lots of place holders). I expected some great graphics, a great story, and the ability to play with three friends online schooling people from the couch.

I have a PS3 and this is the key component missing, I have too many friends to sit and play single screen shooters even if it's a hair prettier. Guess that speaks for sales numbers comparing Killzone 2 and a high end platform shooter like Halo (one would figure they would learn from the market). Same goes for the Resistance series, Resistance 2 seemed like a step back pulling features from the game and cutting back to two player split screen (and the game imho doesn't look any better than Halo 3).

I think 360 has some graphically impressive games on it considering it is a year older than the ps3.

I dont really understand the point of split screen in a FPS game... Or even Co-op. Full screen in a FPS game is how I like to play! Maybe split screen in a racing game!

I agree...Take crysis for example...make it 4 person split screen....do folks still honestly expect it to still look like it does solo?..*nope..or atleast I hope not*

Folks I guess don't realize how taxing it is hardware wise it is to do more than one person on a console...KZ2 would only maybe barely beat GoW2 in grphx if it did split screen...then again a 10million dolloar game vs the uber $$$ dev cost of KZ2....hmm
