Forums - Sales Discussion - When does Sony reach the point of no return in Japan?

Steve 3.2: For some people, this race will be "too early to call" until well after the future generation takes over... The console world is rather very unforgiving, I think the outcome is already clear. Yes, Sony really does require a reason for people to buy their machine. Any reason will do really, they don't seem to have one at the moment- and they don't seem to realize that might be their problem. There isn't enough overlap in the individual markets they're targeting to justify the purchase for most peope (would you buy a combination wood lathe, photocopier, and assault rifle? I don't think many people would...) The PS3 isn't going to drop in price notably... It'd be suicide, on a level even beyond what they're already doing. This option has been beaten to death, it's not any more viable now than when the first person suggested the PS3 would price-drop like "all the other consoles have" I don't think HD is really much of a driving force, or that it will be for anything but a very small portion of the population (the vast majority of people are seriously too stupid or ignorant to connect the cables properly, or perhaps even recognize the difference between SD and HD), though I do agree that downloadable content could take off in a big way. The wii has never aspired to be a media device though, and people generally recognize that when they buy it. (Or I'd think it's pretty obvious anyway.) And, with cable / satellite networks increasingly pushing their DVR boxes, that seems like a more likely conduit for the aforementioned downloadable content than a game console, at least for most people. As such, I highly doubt there will be any sort of notable upgrade to the Wii during it's lifetime You make several very good points; I just don't entirely agree....

Yes, the 360 is doing solid overall in North America. The problem, however, is both the audience target AND the fact that European sales are mediocre at best with japan virtually non-existant. As bad as the hardcore audience looks at the Wii, the reversed can be said of the 360 AND the PS3 with the casual/nongamer audience. Between Wii Sports, Big Brain Academy, MySims, and who knows what else in store for this year BESIDES the wiimote's drawing power (ease of use for simpler games), the 360/PS3 have no real chance of "breaking" into this crowd with just a price drop. Currently the PS3 and 360 are targetting the same hardcore crowd, with casuals as a bonus for some time. The Wii is targetting non-gamers, casual gamers, former gamers, and THEN the hardcore last, thus why most "hardcore" gamers have grown tired of it. If the Wii grabs a majorty of the "light gamer" market while being a nice 2nd console to the "hardcore" market and/or those on a budget (me!), the Wii will easily be sitting on top this gen. And guess what is happening so far? :)

albionus said: Hus, troll this forum more often. I've seen many of the threads deal with the vaunted Sony 1st party machine. PS1 Sony game attach rate was just below 1, PS2 it was below 0.7. Sony accounted for just 28% and 15% of game sales over 1 million respectively. So far Resistence has sold to 36% of PS3 owners despite being one of the few big games on the PS3 at its launch. Zelda has sold to 51% of Wii owners despite over twice the user base. As just one example from the PS2 days, God of War is supposedly one of the true gems of Sony's crown. Yet with a 110 million user base it sold only 2.5 million copies. Sony in all liklihood cannot survive on their 1st party games alone. Nintendo has had an attach rate of greater than 3:1 on every system except the DS (still young so it will probably change) and SNES where it was 2:1. Nintendo has shown it can live on 3rd party whether market leader or not, Sony has given no reason thus far to suspect that it can do the same. Again, we are going to find out soon though. Whats your point ? to list all the available games in the PC since 2 years ago ? (plus upcoming 360 games) Nice try.

"Wii are legion, for Wii are many"

Just remember to split the sales of those multi-platform games that the PS3 shares with the 360. The more the 360 and PS3 struggle with each other over multi platform games is to the benefit of the Wii. ^_^ The more this happens, the more I think it was a smart choice for Nintendo not to have an expensive HD console to compete with the PS3/360. Yep, the PS3 has a ton of games announced for it. They also have the most game cancellations, while the Wii has the most game announcements this year, more than PS3/360 combined. Looking at the release list, this won't change before July in North America or Japan at least. We'll have to wait and see with Europe. :)

Don't underestimate the 360 and PS3. The 360 outsold all in the holiday season, and the fact sony has sold 100 million two gens in a row and the PS2 still outsells most current gen systems. Don't assume just because the wii goes for casul and non gamers that they are going to get them and that they will even want one. Sony expanded the market already, twice. Casuals may look at other options and want another system instead. How will teens act to wii's kiddie games? Nintendo needs to diversify it's game offerings like sony did last gen. The 360 is still #1 and has better online and wide range of games, like the PS3. Nintendo's attempt has not proven succesful yet as it's to early to tell. Sony goes after more than hardcore, but all people with their selection. My sister got out of videogames untilt the PS1 came in and still wants a PS3. A wait and see stance is better for the Wii. I still haven't seen games that look good, they are focusing too much on the wii mote thing. I am on a budget, but I will NEVER buy a wii. I am strict PS360. I don't care about cost.

LOL stupidity.

PS360 is a strict waste of money, 90% of their library is identical to each other. "On a budget" and "don't care about cost", huh.

To you, that is NOT a fact! I know yous lubs yours wiis, but that doesn't mean PS360 is a waste, just that you think it is! To each his own dude! Shit, I could say 90% of the xbox's library was identical to the PS2, but it's exclusives made it worth it. PS3 has exculsive content for GTA4 Driver 5 Final Fantasy XIII God Of War III Gran Turismo 5 KillZone 2 Metal Gear Solid 4 Motorstorm Resistance: Fall of Man Resistance 2: Rise of Man Tekkan 6 Hmmmmm...Look like you need to due some homework...Unless you can prove none of those are Exclusive titles. Unless that it looks like PS360 is a good deal. FYI, I maybe on a budget but not cheap! I will save the money to buy what I want instead of buyinh something cheap.
