Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is FF6 such a fan favorite?

@lurker - that's complete speculation with no proof whatsoever. I could make the exact same claim about FFVII. Over 100 million PS1's are out there and as far as we know millions could have downloaded FFVII as well. so you mean to tell me that the number of ppl who emulated VI is the same as the number of ppl who bought it? Show me 1 game where this has happened and I'll believe you.

I just beat it recently over the weekend on an emulator and felt that it was a great game, but I do not get why people are so in love with it. Obviously this is just my opinion, so I just wanted to know why so many people are such a huge fan of FF6?

I am 21 and played FF4 on SNES when I was like 5 or 6 so it's not like I am not accustomed to the the sprite versions. I still prefer 4, 7 and 9 over 6... so I just really wanted to know what makes everyone such a fan of 6?

You just answered your own question.  You played 4 when you were 'younger' and remember back to that one fondly.  Turn it around for others who played FF6 instead of FF4 first.

On another note, I'll just say that every FF game has a hardcore fanbase and a group that doesn't like it as much.  Its not like everyone likes FF6 the best.  In fact, general concensus is that FF7 is the one obsessed over the most, followed by FF4, then FF6.  So what it really comes down to is your tastes.

And my personal tastes are that FF8 and FF6 are tied for my favorites, but for different reasons.  Mostly because they focus on the characters, good gameplay/customization and have good exploration options outside of the main storyline.  Whereas many of the other Final Fantasy games lack these features because they focus more on the story (like FF4 and FF7).

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I think its because of all the characters and all the memorable tracks in the game. Its good but not the best FF imo.

When I first played Final Fantasy VI back in like 2004, it was because my best friend had recommended it to me. He didn't play many console rpgs, but it was his favorite of the ones he had played (and I had played many Final Fantasies before it), so I went in with higher expectations. Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of things I loved about Final Fantasy VI, but its shallow plot (in a plot-heavy game) and poor character interaction (I'm talking part 2 here) were a huge turn off. What mostly kept me going was the music, a few lovable characters (Ultros!), and the games relative ease.

Although, I should note that he also recommended Chrono Trigger and I fell in love with it. It is my second favorite SNES game, Dragon Quest VI being my favorite :)

And each character had their own abilities or special uses, so no character was truly useless (*cough* Cait Sith *cough*).

I can agree with claims like "best wise-cracking octopus"; there's no doubt that FF6 is superior in that department. But lack of useless characters? Nani?

And Cait Sith gets a lot of bad press on account of the fact that he sucks, but he has catchy theme music and he does have uses...

Oh God, did you really just say Nani?

In fact, why even respond to my post? You didn't say anything.

Well, as for me, FF6 is indeed my favourite FF, and not only for nostalgia reasons, mainly because I can still replay it nowadays and enjoy it over any other FF.

I agree that FF6 may not be the best FF in all departments, other FF games do better things than FF6 in some departments, but FF6 is the one who does the best overall representation of what Final Fantasy means.

Plus, it has the best Villain ever made for FF and it has one of the best scenes ever made for any videogame, IMO, the Opera Scene and the theme, Aria Di Mezzo Caratere

Cause it was awesome! I played the game on an emulator and it was fantastic!

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

Yes, I said nani. Kawaii desu ka?

And I said lots of things. In my post "useless" Cait Sith showed himself to be as useful as any of the 73 optional characters with no storyline that you pick up on your travels in FF6. Really, praising FF6 for not having any useless characters would be like me praising FF7 for its translation. No matter how much I love the game, I would never go as far as to say something like that, since the translation is obviously awful. Likewise, FF6 has more useless characters than any other game in the main series; praise any aspect of the game you like, but don't praise the lack of useless characters. My feelings should have been clear from the fact that I expressed confusion and posted a reaction image of an unimpressed Miu after quoting the bit about "no useless characters".

However, I can see why you were so upest by my response, since it was clear from the smilies that I was being incwedibly sewious.

Hmmm. Maybe I SHOULD try out this game if everyone is being extremely laudatory of it.

EDIT: Well since it's not on DS, VC, OR Playstation, I can't play it. Damn.

Don't! You're being trolled!

Everyone says it's great to trick people into playing it. When you actually get the game it will turn out to be a clone of Superman 64, except instead of Superman, you'll be playing as Hitler! Also, the game gives you cancer and steals your bike. Don't do it!

1) The opera scene.
2) Ultros and Mr. Chupon: "Fungahhhh!!!!"
3) Setzer letting a coin toss decide his life.
4) More epic situations like infanticide, suicide, destroying the entire world.
5) Sabin's epic journey through the Phantom Forest, the Phantom Train, Baren Falls, the Veldt, and the Serpent Trench.
6) And like everybody else said, best characters, best music, best intro, best ending, best abilities, best magic, best music, best music, best music.
7) No FMVs.
8) Moogles.
9) No really lame emo characters that are obsessed with their mother.
10) Getting eaten by a dinosaur.
