The first thing you need to go learn about is a thing called unions. Come back 3-4 years from now once you've got a better understanding of how employers interact with employees. You know, after you've turned old enough to not only have a job but to understand your role in it.

they probably were working on projects that completed or were canceled, company's like Microsfot often hire specialists for specific projects and let them go when the project is completed no point keeping full time specialist staff that you don't need anymore.

Yes MS has let some people go in some areas at the same time they are hiring people in other areas. Some times layoffs are just getting rid of poor performers.
Just check out careers.microsoft.com.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
