Wow I never realized so many half witted people on the intranetZ don't know what they are talking about and try to pass their lack of knowledge as facts.

http://www.edge-online.com/news/microsoft-paid-50m-advance-gta-iv-content

"Next-Gen contacted Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who further explained the deal. "What Microsoft did was pay a $50 million advance," he said, much in the same way a big-name author receives a payment in advance of his or her next book."

"If revenues don't meet that figure, Take-Two will have to return some of the advance, according to Pachter. But he said that there's no reason to believe Take-Two would actually miss that revenue target."

MS paid for the DLC to get made, be exclusive for a year and got their money back, one way or another. Now PS3 owners get to enjoy this game. Mission acomplished for all.  Lets move on.

Hrmm....listen to what Take Two said? Or listen to Pachter?

I'd trust Pachter unless you have a link which quotes take two employee saying "Microsoft paid 50 million for this DLC and we got to fuck them royaly!"

MS management ain't no fool to waste money like that...they are infact considered one of the best management companies out there. they could have easily bought full timed GTA4 exclusivity for 50 million.

In all honesty, it does make sense. I'm not sure if Microsoft shouted the figure out or not but it's a good way to advertise that you're paying for exclusivity.

Also, did you call people halfwitted and then quote Pachter? I mean, he's been on the ball lately but there was a long time that he was off his game before his recent string of successes..

No one other than Pachter has come out and said anything about this deal. Every other article is "MS pays 50 mil for GTA4 DLC...the end". No details.

I didn't say people were halfwitted based on this article alone...all possibilities of MS giving cash 50 mil to take two without any strings attached flew out the window when the PS3/PC version was announced.

Just think about it...

Microsoft: "We will pay you 50 million, which you don't have to pay back or we dont have to earn back. And no, we don't want to make this DLC exclusive. We want to only keep it on our console for a year."

I mean, if it was Sega...maybe, Atari...definetly...but Microsoft doesn't do business like this.

So your saying its like this

Disolitude is a game developer...

I come to him and say "Here is 50 million internet bucks, Make a game for our system"

right?

But most people think its like

disolitude is gonna make a game

I come and say "here is 50 million to make it exclusive"

Don't be silly, MS doesn't make games, they just buy them temporarily, the closest thing to a 360 exclusive is a game MS commissions but there are what 3 of those

Really?

- Fable

- Project Gotham

- Viva Pinata

- Perfect Dark Zero

Just a few that come to mind. Yes, they have a serious lack of development studios, and development in general, especially when compared to the competition(s). But to say they don't develop at all would be a tad inaccurate, no?

They did buy rare which makes games, (albeit poorly now) but even so they only have 2ed and 3rd party no first party and for your information the company that made Project Gotham Racing is a subsidiary of Activision not MS

It's still Microsoft's franchise (PGR) and as long as it's such, it should count as theirs, as should Halo, even if, (yes I know) they don't physically do the work themselves. Point is, they DO make games, just not as many as the other companies. I'd just like to see more of their financial efforts put to new IPs and such rather than these DLCs.

Owning rights to games =/= making games

@CGI-Quality

You are perhaps one of my favorite posters and I can generally say hats off to you....buuuut you gotta admit, you kinda got pwned by this one hehe. Considering "MS doesn't make games" was highlighted.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

LOL...xbox gamers got the play Episodes from Liberty City a year earlier for Lost and 6 months for Gay Tony...the DLC and Retail sold over 3 million copies...M$ "LOANED" 2K the cash for this exclusivity...and M$ has been repaid and then some...I'm not getting how this was a waste? It probably cost Rockstar 2-3 million to develop the DLC, so they made out like bandits, so it's a win-win for everybody concerned...even PS3 only gamers who are getting it 12 months later. This is athe same as Fallout DLC...I guess that was a failure as well...lol...not in my book...and I have the achievements to show it!

Who made Forza? I thought that was a MS owned doohickey? (technical jargon there folks)

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

It just doesn't make sense they would go to another company like Microsoft for a 'Loan' in exchange for favors that go directly in the face of the series established fanbase..  Perhaps some of the money was a loan, some of it wasn't?  I'm not buying it was a loan; that's just how much it costs for timed exclusivity, on a separate platform against it's own fanbase - for the biggest game in the industry.  I think part of it is Microsoft was hoping to sell more of the 360 version off the promise of DLC, and that would offset the loss - when you're looking at GTA sales with a game guaranteed to sell well, a small push can do alot.  On a side note even if MS made 50mil back off DLC sales alone(they probably didn't) the sales on Sony's end would be pure profit to Sony(that MS would have missed out on)

Looking at the current financial statements, over the last 3 years...it is very clear that M$ has made the smart decisions on the business of gaming....
