Forums - Gaming Discussion - so what if microsoft DIDN'T waste money... GTA dlc

on timed exclusives, do you think they could pump out some awesome new ip's?????

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/2010/01/29/2861/grand_theft_auto_episodes_from_liberty_city_coming_to_playstation_3_and_pc

50 million dollars....................10 million less then gt5's total development cost imo, for something coming to there compition for free, and they also get a new ip..............

any thoughts,

oh and if this is indication of anything I'd soooo put my money on a ps3 mass effect

Part of it was probably to help get GTAIV away from being a PS3 exclusive. Remember at the time when GTAIV was in development it was widely expected that the PS3 would be another PS2. I think in that respect the money was well spent.

Hmmm.... Because of that about 5m of PS3 owners felt like they got a kick it the face from Rockstar for over a year.

The original deal had Rockstar obliged to pay back all the money if the DLC made enough. I highly doubt the DLC would be going to PS3 if Microsoft didn't make their money back and then some.

Indeed, the only question is whether Microsoft made their money back off the DLC or whether Sony had to pay the difference late DLC...

LOL If it's any answer to anything, Mass Effect 2 is already out on 360

Timed exclusives are worthwhile. Last gen Playstation 2 had a huge success partly thanks to the GTA franchises being on it first.

If we go even more "massimo sistema", we can see how XBOX 360's business model is so very better thought than PS3's by comparing this gen's profits, market share, and attachment rate with those of last gen.

I HIGHLY doubt the deal came out good for MS....

The sales of Liberty City Stories are at 1.2 million. Let's just say 800.000 more people downloaded Episodes, Lost and the Damned and/or Ballad of Gay Tony. They all paid 40 bucks for it, right? That's approx. 2 million sold copies. That's makes a revnue of 80 million dollars. Let's just say MS gets the HUGE amount of 50% of the revenue (The number is way too high, no way MS would get 50% of the share, but just let take that example). That means MS still lost 10 million dollars with the deal. Of course you could include the sales of the Xbox 360's that sold instead of a PS3, maybe then MS would have made money from the deal, but MS in no way got that much share of the sales of Liberty City Stories.

So I guess MS made a huge mistake with the deal.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

The 50 million was a loan, Rockstar had to pay MS back for the whole thing. The investment was clearly worth it since the 360 version outsold the PS3 version of GTA4, one of if not the most powerful brand Sony had last gen as a timed exclusive and a game that was considered to be associated with the playstation name.

Also your last statement is stupid. There have been so many games going multiplatform this gen that I could say the same thing about any 3rd party PS3 exclusive. Since FF13, Tekken, Assassins Creed and countless other PS3 exclusives went multiplatform then that must mean that FFvs13 and MGS4 are also going to go multiplatform! See how stupid that sounds?

You should read my post, and the one below yours which I will repaste here.

You should probably do some research before you make up figures. The Lost and Damned was confirmed to have sold over a million DLC just a few months after release. Theres no telling how much it has sold now. The Ballad of Gay Tony which has been said to be the better of two DLC's has no figures announced yet but you can pretty much bet on it selling another million DLC at the least. Also take into account that Episodes from Liberty City is a pretty new release and will probably sell 2 million copies then we can see how off your figures are.

And this is all the while not taking into account that the 50 million was a loan that Rockstar had to pay back so in essence MS lost nothing.

Who knows.. I think they could have spend it better on current game developments.. but maybe it was a good thing to do..

I think some Xbox 360 owners could feel a little back-stabbed now though
