 not at all.. they are just switching costs from manufacturing to purchasing in bulk which will be 1000 times cheaper. 

You do understand that R&D stands for Research & Development? And I don't think that one can say either way whether it will be cheaper or not. There is simply not enough information to say either way. For all we know the Cell could sell like crazy outside of the PS3 and Sony would miss all the profits. 

I thought they were pulling out of some Cell research thing or whatever to start to focus on 35nm chips.

 R&D can be split into two different sections ie Sony could still fund research or have a guy or two working on the main blue-prints/design, and all that.

But that's not what you said originally. And there is a big difference from having one or two people vs 100 people working on a project.
