I know everyone is saying the Wii is selling less this year because last year it was supply constrained over the holidays (which is true), But I think I've found a better reason

Kern retailers can't keep Wii in stock

BAKERSFIELD, Ca. -- The Nintendo Wii is sold out in stores all over the city.

Stores, such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy, say when the gaming system comes in stock, it flies off the shelves. The Wii has been a video game hit for about four years, and stores here in Kern County still can't keep up with the demand.

Eyewitness News wanted to know just how in-demand the gaming systems were, so a reporter made some calls. After calling six places in Bakersfield that sell Wiis, Eyewitness News got the same response: sold out.

The results online weren't much better.

Eyewitness News called stores from Southern California all the way up to Canada and over to the East Coast. Only one store in Glendale and another in New York said they had a couple Wiis left.

It's having shortages RIGHT NOW!

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Last year (jan 2009), Nintendo had shortages in december and used coupons through january achieving the highest month for a hardware. This year, you had shortages during january. Nothing to worry again.

You should put the numbers in the OP, not keep them in the 3rd post.

And PS3 > 360 because it is now affordable.

Great numbers all round. Ignoring PSP.

and its PS3=360 to be fair.

and yeah... psp needs..... something.

thats funny, i tought 78.362 was a bigger number than 77.276

Holy shit. This is the second report of shortages now. Clearly Nintendo must have reduced production, d'oh!

lol they always say that when the ps3 outsells the x360 by an amount like that, but if x360 sells just 1 unit then ps3, well it goes back to ps3 is doomed and NPD says it all. (which is false)

it's the future of handheld

Nintendo is domed!
They are only selling 2x instead of 3x compared to last year.

Considering that Wii has still been up YoY overall in the last few weeks thanks to Japan, perhaps what's happening is that Nintendo has been sending more consoles to Japan than it was last year, hence less consoles in the U.S., hence shortages.

I doubt mass effect will move much hardware, being a sequel to a plot heavy game snuffs out any chance. Id say MAG has an as good if not better chance of moving hardware.

Nope, Mass Effect 2 is like a million times more popular than MAG. Check the Amazon sales charts for example, or just any indicator of hype like forum threads.

PS3 barely beating 360 despite being 299 and the same price as 360 now. Never thought I'd see that day. Wouldn't be suirprised if 360 beats PS3 in NPD.

A couple things

1. Mass effect will sell more sortware than MAG, but people who want to play it already own an xbox - therefore little hardware increase

2. Xbox is still cheaper than ps3, and getting its ass kicked worldwide. Even a small loss in its home territory hurts.

Tie in America, maybe PS3 is selling 25%-33% better in Europe imo (maybe not), and Japan doesn't even count.

A small loss (tie) in it's home territory doesnt hurt at all given the current relative pricing (PS3 a massively better value). It more speaks to the fact Sony can never overtake 360 in America for sure now, no matter how much they cut the price.

japanz doesn'tz exitz xO

Wii preduction has been reduced for some odd reason (they had no issues during the holidays), same with the ps3 (the 120gb had issues during the holidays ) so I honestly don't know what they are doing..

According to Gamestop's statement they did in fact have trouble with Wii stock in December.
