Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Hack Released

Hack the PS3 and add true MKV support!

Doesn't seem like it's even close to compromising the ps3.

This comment discusses someone elses opinion of the 'hack':

Put simply, this exploit is in software. The PS3's processor was designed with this kind of exploit in mind and prevents them having any effect. I don't see this leading to pirated games.

i read it and it fucking sickens me >_>

Patch it Sony !

I hope thats the case. I wonder if sony can take some sort of legal action against this guy.

Just to say : stiak is correct. The chances of using this method to obtain the root decryption keys from this method are almost nil.

The Tl;Dr version of what this hack means, unless the keys are found:

People using this hardware exploit could theoretically run a much more powerfull homebrew setup, if someone takes the time to write gfx drivers and etc. Pirating games with this exploit is not generally feasable.

Unless it helps me find my last blast shard in Infamous, I'm not interested.

Currently playing: Marvel vs. Capcom 3, League of Legends

From what I've read on the subject so far, there's still a long way to go before anyone can play a pirated game on a PS3.

The SPU's still remain unencrypted and not directly controllable.

Even if after reading the hack/comments and articles researching about the validity of the claim, this hack will regardlessly not be very helpful. It is only valid on older PS3 models, not the slim. People who buy only pirated games have not bought the PS3 yet and the only PS3s they can buy can't run the hack. There is a possibility of firmware updates being added and he himself stated that would work only for current versions(which he didn't check anyway).

It won't affect sales by much I believe....

I am a Gamer... I play games and not consoles. I have a PC and Console on which I game... I like games. End of Story!

As long as I can keep this information away from my friend before XIII releases then i'm fine.
