Forums - Sales Discussion - Super Mario Galaxy barely moves Wii Hardware

We've all seen the <a href="http://m-create.com/ranking/>Media Create</a> numbers that show that the XBOX 360 has outsold the PS3 last week but no one seems to mention how much of a resounding thud SMG had on Wii sales.  The Wii only increased ten thousand from the week prior to the release of SMG.  So let's talk about that.  Let's talk about how the Wii's AAA title couldn't even give it higher sales than the DS for one week.  This was supposed to be THE game and all of that good stuff.  I just want people to speak on that rather than the XBOX 360 outselling the PS3 by 230-some odd units for one week when we know next week it'll be back in the single digits.

Uh, the hardware is limited, dude.

And yes, the game didn't do as expected in Japan.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Double post... that's weird, I've never had this site double post a thread... It has been going really slow today.

Well it's obvious that Japan is now a handheld market - I'd put money on there being no home console, including the Wii that will go on to beat the DS in a long time to come yet.

SMG will still be a game that many people yet will go on to buy a Wii for, especially in Europe and the US.

That's a very nice excuse...

Uh...yes.  It is.  It's not going to spike up a ton, because it's simply not easily available everywhere.

The game didn't do poorly...just not what people expected.  Japan's market is weird...they don't seem to want Mario Galaxy or Zelda as much as casual games for Wii...they still buy it quite a bit, but I'm pretty sure the American and European markets will sell considerably better, possibly double Japan's.  It just seems like hype is bigger over here for it than Japan.

The game has only been released in Japan tho right? And Japan, unless I'm mistaken, lately hasn't been known to buy a whole lot of console games on the first week of release. Yes, they own console games but I don't think they buy as much games on the first week like they use to....

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

@Benkenobi88

the Ps3 hasn't done poorly.....just not what people expected....lol

OK I could say that to..

don't be in DENIAL!

WII did very badly for the SMG week, no doubts their

IF it was moving 60K + BEFORE, then why not in the week of SMG release

& we ALSO know it wasn;t supply constrained in the last month, so what of the leftover supply??

Supporter of

 SONY & Nintendo

Consoles owned - SNES, N64, PS, GC, PS2, PSP, PS3

 I DO NOT support Xbox

My prediction for YEARS END:

WII - 18.3 Million

Xbox 360 - 15 Million

Playstation 3 - 8.5 Million

How could the supply be constrained when in the beginning of the year, the Wii was selling sixty, seventy k/week and somehow they've sold less but the supply is constrained... Delusional much...?

@ darthdevidem

Well stated.

We'll have to see.....

Thanks to kenobi after I got him to ban my old account (dallas) after someone hacked into it and being ok with me coming back under a slightly different username.  I appreciate our communication in the PMs.  Also I want to give a big thank you to vgchartz for being one of the cooler websites around.

Oh, and I'm still the next Michael Pachter
