Forums - Nintendo Discussion - TvC - How do you feel about unlocking characters?

Just read the gamepro review of TvC (4 out of 5) and one of their complaints is having to unlock characters.

Maybe times have changed, but I love unlocking characters. Going from 24 to 56 in marvel vs capcom 2, going from 8 to 12 in the original super smash bros, going from 10 to 19 in soul caliber.... those are some of my favorite gaming memories. I love that "I wonder who's next" feeling. I guess maybe things are different with most rosters being spoiled these days with early leaks on the internet, but I still like it.

What you do think?

I love unlocking charatcers, going from what 12 in Brawl at the beggining to nearly 40 is so fun

Love unlocking characters!.. Tekken 6 disopointed alot of ppl when it removed characters, it removes alot of replay value and a chance to understand all the characters

I personally like it, but I can see why people don't like it.

I bet it's kind of annoying for people to have a "Level of skill" needed to unlock stuff in a game they paid for.

If someone buys a game, they should really be able to have access to all the contents in it.

I know while I usually like unlocking characters I found it annoying to have to unlock them in Smackdown VS Raw 2010 because I didn't want to play the Road to Wrestle-mania stuff at all really and just wanted to create characters... but the unlocked characters had songs and motions that would be good for character creation.

It would probably be good if there was an alternative method for unlocking. Like how Brawl has both skill based and time based methods for unlocks.

*sigh*

I don't believe that he is giving a lower score because of this feature... Now the reviewers are really using their personal tastes to make a review, this is really sad. It's like complaining about random encounters or turn based battle system in a RPG and saying that it's outdated.

Anyway, I don't see any purpose in finishing a fighting game unless it will give me a new character. For me, any fighting game should have unlockable characters because it will increase the replayability.

"I don't want to have to play the game to get the characters. I want them unlocked when I start it up so I don't."

So now we are complaining a Wii game doesn't do enough for the casual journalist... I mean hardcore reviewers of the almighty internet. Seriously, gaming is supposed to have some form of accomplishment, and in fighting games you are rewarded new characters for your accomplishments. Geez, do you just want them to make a game with no sense of accomplishment... even the casual games have that.

I like it - if the characters are secret, and not used in advertising.

Wait, haven't we been unlocking fighters in fighting game since their inception? What's the big deal now?

I don't mind having some locked characters, but locking content up has gone overboard in recent years.

Raving Rabbids is the worst offender: you get the game for partying, but you can't play 90% of it without playing the stupid single player - which has its moments, but it's still a bad design for a game that's mostly about partying.

Less than 50% of the game should be locked up front. In fact I'd say it should be more in the range of 20%-30% unlockables.

Well I already have the Japanese version.. so it sucks for me to unlock the new characters in the western version... I reallly want to play with zero, tekkaman blade and Joe the condor...
