Forums - Sales Discussion - PS2 VS DS when will the DS catch the PS2 sales ?

For this contest, i think it's best to go by shipment data for the 2 consoles.

Shipment data isn't consistent since (as I mentioned earlier) SCE includes Chinese sales and Nintendo doesn't.  Plus we don't know "real" PS2 shipment totals anyway since SCE's never given an updated total figure after switching from "production shipment" accounting methods back in 2007.  Any attempt to total "PS2 shipments" will be double counting an unknown amount of units.

Sales trackers are the only way to know actual sales, and we have more than just VGC to go by.  Best and fairest comparison would be using NPD + Enterbrain + Charttrack/GFK imo, which Nintendo always gives out in their annual reports anyway.

Even then, VGChartz is probably the most unfair way of doing this comparison...

No, the least accurate/fair would still be DS shipments to PS2 shipments+production shipments.  No matter how you try to reconcile that, you're still giving PS2 an inherent (and even inaccurate) advantage (Chinese sales, Reporting method double counting).

VGC's coverage may be more limited than the big trackers, but it's still comparing like with like.  It's better than "shipments".  Besides, Nintendo's traditionally more conservative with shipments anyway.

That's where we disagree then.

I wonder if/when we will ever see correct PS2 numbers here.

Isn't using NPD + Enterbrain + Charttrack/GFK giving Nintendo an unfair advantage?

One of Sony's big advantage in this industry is distribution, they've managed to sell much better in markets Nintendo has difficulty with, many of those wouldn't be tracked at all, they only turn up in shipment figures and are estimated by others.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

www.xnagg.com/zombieasteroids/publish.htm

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Probably sooner than we get correct Valkyria figures. ;)

What's wrong with VC figures, exactly?

Brett says he is happy with them.

Wheras, im 99% positive i've seen him (or maybe it was The Source) say the PS2 numbers are wrong.

It's a like vs like comparison at least, it's literally the same markets being covered.  Nintendo now has official distribution in most of the same expanded markets not covered anyway (Korea, Russia, India, Brazil, Mexico, Southeast Asia, Middle East, etc).

Again, due to Sony's historical accounting methods you can't even get an accurate PS2 shipment total, much less do a comparison with DS.

Valkyria's massively overtracked in America on VGC.  NPD has a ltd of ~130k US.

I'd say around August/September which gives them enough time to put on a decent lead before the years out.

Valkyria is massively undertracked on NPD.
