Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Joystiq stealth trolling the Wii, too

I am sure you can see they are taking a jab at Nintendo.

It's like a fanboy litmus test... and you failed.

Well It's true. Look at the best 09 sellers that aren't Nintendo.

1 - Monster Hunter Tri (Only out in Japan so far) - 1 million
2 - Guitar Hero 5 910k
3 - Toy Story Mania 730k
4 - Tiger "RAWR" Woods 730kish
5 -Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2010 - 720k
6- Disney Sing It: Pop Hits 720k
7- Just Dance 690k
8- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition 670k
9- Guitar Hero: Metallica 620k
10- Fifa Soccer 10 600k

So outside of Monster Hunter Tri nothing hit for a million in 09 for releases. Though to be fair Tigers Woods 10 outsold It's 360 and PS3 counterparts, as did Guitar Hero 5 and Cabela's Big Game Hunter (by upwards of 600k. That's huge).

It's just that simple.

I've had all the Nintendo consoles save the GC (I fed up with consoles with PS2 and I became a PC gamer), and it's always the same...

The "problem" is Nintendo makes awesome games, and 3rd parties can't even smell that quality many times... it's just that...

Is there a better "racing game" in Wii than Mario Kart? Nope

Is there a better fighting game in Wii than SSB:Brawl? Nope

Is there a better 2D platformer in Wii than NSMB:Wii? Nope

Is there a better 3D platformer in Wii than SM Galaxy? Nope

Is there a better adventure game in Wii than Z:TP? Nope

Is there a better "shooter" (well, actually is not a usual shooter) in Wii than MP3? Nope

...

...

And so on...

Why I should buy a shooter like Darkside chronicles and Dead Space when I already have HotD:Overkill? Maybe these two games are better than Overkill, but I won't pay 50€ for yet another shooter... Hell, if they released a decent RE or Dead Space, and not dumbed-down-different-genre-spin-offs I would buy them.

The conduit bombed... ok... it is just a generic game... We, Wii users are not graphic whores (for that we have the HD twins)... so please, just do a good and fun game to play... I don't mind it has so "good graphics for the Wii". It is incredibly generic...

Madworld "bombed" (well, that's what some people say, I think it was a success)... It's awfully niche and low cost game. I have it, but of all the people I know it only appeals to a few.

Muramasa "bombed"... Another niche game... I love it, but it is still niche, and is REALLY hard to find in stores... I am Spanish and I bought it in Finland, because in Spain I couldn't find it.

A boy and his blob "bombed"... I really want to buy this game... but I didn't know when it was released due to the ZERO press and advertising it got. And until now I haven't been able to find it in Spain... Just in Amazon UK

As a "hardcore player" and Wii user I am really annoyed this gen with many of the 3rd parties... We get the crappiest games and with less effort of the great majority of them, being only some small studies the ones that really take some risk or effort to make good games. For getting a SH:Shattered Memories we get tons of crappy spin offs and dumbed down franchises, along with horzez and all the like. Here in Spain you could see a lot of "exercise games" and party games ads everywhere, but any good single "traditional" game... Then, what did you really expect to happen?

PS: Not that the other consoles don't have problems though... I read EDGE every month and the majority of the HD twins games look all the same to me... and when a really good and innovative game is realeased (like bayonetta) it also flops... 360's top ten is just horrible, 9/10 being shooters... I don't know, maybe I am just tired of some kinds of games, but yuk...

[...]

A better hardcore racing game would be possible, as Mario Kart is definitely casual, but:

  1. as hardcore it would have a smaller, although devoted, audience
  2. it would need a proper wheel with pedals and gear lever or pads to be played at its best, to be purchased separately at higher price than a Wii Wheel, furtherly shrinkng the potential audience

So a better racer would be possible for hardcore tastes, but it couldn't even dream of being a better seller.

Well, when you can find something on the same budget/effort level as Resident Evil 5, Left 4 Dead, or Assassins Creed 2, then we can talk.

Until then, I'm not listening.

Exactly... And the other "hardcore gamers" friends that I have (we have at least 9-10 games per user) think exactly the same...

Oh I realize that. From that list I don't see anything big budget. I don't know of Madworld or HOTD or The Conduit budgets either but I imagine they can't be much. The only one I remember that was heavily commericialized on that list that wasn't multiplatform was Just Dance, as in Internet ads. I don't remember seeing much TV ads. I was just showing people a list of the top 10 non-nintendo titles for 09. HOTD and a few others still did pretty well just not top 10 level for the year.

Sorry about that, shouldn't have directed that towards you.

Madworld, HOTD, and The Conduit were all successes despite their relatively low sales anyways. Joystiq is pretty ignorant when taking potshots at the Wii like that though.

"Wii software flew off the shelves, proving that Wii games sell ... as long as they're published by Nintendo."

It's the word "sell". As in simply selling the games. As in they're drawing the conclusion of selling games at all just from that list.

It's not pointing out the flying off the shelves part, because the final part of the sentence would come after that, not the other part.

See what is setting some of us off, stof?
