Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Anyone believe or hope Microsoft will leave the videogame business?

I don't want Microsoft to leave. I need a group of fanboys to point to and say "there are where the retards are".

Just kidding.

Around the Network

it would be a great day for me if microsoft went away.

early on in my gaming, i was all about nintendo but i never hated sega.

later on i loved sony but i never hated nintendo.

now that i'm an adult, i want whats best for me. i HATE microsoft in the gaming industry.

this is my opinion, you can take it or leave it. anyone who thinks microsoft brought anything to the gaming industry is new to gaming. yes, they have an excellent online service but i personally think that would have been the natural progression of video games. even if sony or nintendo didn't do it, somebody would have.

yes they have a nice interface. they make *ucking windows!!!! they should have a nice interface. with nice menus and all the rest!!!

what makes me mad about microsoft is how they are affecting the games we see now. i honestly feel like the gaming world we be better right now if they weren't involved. i just checked the site today to catch up on my news only to see that so much shit was cut out of ff13 that they could make another game. what does that tell you??? microsoft has so much money that they can sway a company that lives off of this franchise to compromise the integrity of their flagship title.

its not just with ff13. other titles have been delayed or rebuilt so that they can run the same on both systems. no wait, sometimes they run worse on the playstation because its easier to develop on a system thats not as advanced.

it truley boggles my mind why gamers would stand for that. yeah the economy is down, money is tight. at the end of the day, these companies have to make good games. i've seen so many titles that did well last gen that can hardly sell this gen. why do you think this is?

i honestly feel like microsoft is looking at what the ps2 did and is trying to immitate that. how is that looking towards the future? the best thing i think they have done was gears of war. it was fresh, it looked great, it showed progression. other than that(and left for dead) all they have been doing is making sure that they can get anything that sony has or had.

also lets take a look at Rare. i used to love that company. they could really be producing some grat things for microsofts camp. what do we have? perfect dark, FAIL. viva pinata and banjo and kazooee. really? really??? where killer instinct? wheres some new games by this great company?

sorry, i'm ranting. i guess my whole point is that microsoft has so much money but they dont really know what to do with it. i would LOVE to see some of these other companies to take a stab at it. apple, samsung, toshiba, ANYBODY!!!!

I really don't think microsoft understands gamers as they do popular culture. halo was a hit. great. you'll get plenty of halo as long as you have an xbox. what else though? i think nintendo and sony do a much better job understanding there market. i'd love to see them go away.

microsoft has cornerd the gaming market. the amount of money they've poured into xbox and exclusive content has made them pretty powerful. with all that money poured into the exclusive content, you know they've formed strong relationships with other developers therefore gaining more powerful friends.
microsoft is in it for the long haul.

Guess your body grew but your mentality went another way..

In other words, you're basically admitting they changed it for the better, but you just didn't want it to be them, but another company...

You basically want to blame Microsoft for something that might not be the case. Was the stuff cut out of the Japanese version too? Well, then I guess you have the answer that it wasn't MS' fault...

its not just with ff13. other titles have been delayed or rebuilt so that they can run the same on both systems. no wait, sometimes they run worse on the playstation because its easier to develop on a system thats not as advanced.

Lol your fanboyism is showing. I guess you are also one of those people who feel threatened by MS...

MS isn't the one copying everything from Xbox Live, needing to play catch-up, and having relatively mediocre game sales.

also lets take a look at Rare. i used to love that company. they could really be producing some grat things for microsofts camp. what do we have? perfect dark, FAIL. viva pinata and banjo and kazooee. really? really??? where killer instinct? wheres some new games by this great company?

Finally you got a point.

The main problem they had last gen is that 3rd party support was mediocre.. They had the most powerful system, but combine that with nVIdia issues blah blah, and they had to disband that console. They simply wanted to do things differently for 3rd parties this time around, and guess what, it's working for them.

I really don't think microsoft understands gamers as they do popular culture. halo was a hit. great. you'll get plenty of halo as long as you have an xbox. what else though? i think nintendo and sony do a much better job understanding there market. i'd love to see them go away.

That's why MS is doing so well for a new contender right?

I basically completely disagree.

I think it depends on the sales trend. If it goes on like now, with the PS3 / 360 gap decreasing by 200k a week, it could spell a quick return to the last place for MS. At 200k a week, the gap would be down to zero then favorable to PS3 in only 6 months (5 million gap).

I doubt the MS shareholders would allow another last place in video games after the Xbox 1 fiasco which lost billions. Gaming was never one of MS main businesses to begin with...

So IF Natal doesn't succeed and PS3 increases its domination in weekly sales, I think there's definitely a good chance that MS gives up on gaming. Remember the 360 is really successful in only one country in the world, the US (two actually, with the UK being the other for cultural reasons), partly for nationalistic reasons. In every other country, PS3 already has a bigger installed base while being more expensive and despite being released one year later. Hardly a success on a worldwide scale.

On the other hand, if Natal succeeds or MS somehow manages to avoid being last again (which I highly doubt according to current sales trend), then they won't give up on gaming and will take part in another console gen.

I personnally hope they won't leave as competition is good. I don't hope they succeed too much either, since I don't like their business model where you pay for everything including free things like peer 2 peer online gaming, where ads are everywhere and the hardware is unreliable... Worst than everything, they tend to close more studios than they open, and use their money to buy timed exclusives instead of helping game development like Sony does. We need more MS 1st party studios quickly.

If the 360 is profitable for Microsoft currently, why would they drop out?

They never recovered the billions lost with Xbox 1 and RROD fiascos until now. The road is still very long.

You never recover sunk costs EVER.  The measure of whether a system remains around is how it is doing at a current time, and forecasts on what will come next.  However billions lost in the past are not a reason why a company leaves.

first of MS has been in the VG business for about 15 years so about the same as Sony... MS as a whole is probably one of the leading company in R&D in the software and high tech world people might not like it but it is a fact... and they hire among the best people to do that job that is another fact....
and then you have to remember they are not as much in the VG industry than they are in the multimedia entertainment bizz, the XBox is just a first step to set up their presence in the living room which will be the place where people will do a lot of their non professional stuff, the era of the PC in the office is approaching the end and MS knows that... this is the only reason XBox exist and the only reason they CAN'T stop it or otherwise they are signing the end of their empire as it exist today...
so the end of MS in the VG world is not happening in that life time not by choice but by obligation...

Couldn`t have said it any better myself. I totally agree with Night on this.

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Official member of the Xbox 360 Squad

I don't want them to leave I just want them to stop milking the hell out of people.

i wasn't going to respond to any of this because i was simply stating how i felt but...*uck it. i'll bite....

first off i'll just say i may as well just say i'm a raging fanboy who's blinded by my love for one company that i can only see what i want to see. apparently if you have a strong opinion against one company, you are a fanboy and thats all there is to it.

i'll start with the first comment. i don't see how you can say my body grew but my mental state didn't. of course i've matured, otherwise i would think nintendo and super mario was the best thing ever and thats all that should be on the market because thats how i felt when i was 8. not sure what your point was there.

you completely ignored what i said in the second statement. i'm glad they built a very good online service. i really am. however, do you really think if it wasn't for them that online wouldn't be what it is today? its not like its any thing new. they brought it to the mainstream, good for them. i feel(and i know i have to be careful when i say this because its obviously my fanboyism making me say this) that it would have happend anyways. microsoft or not.

yes i do want to blame microsoft. you have no proof that it wasn't them, just like i have no proof that it was them. i just know they have deep pockets and they would do anything to avoid making their system look inferior. fair enough?

fanboyism and being threatend. hmm... first i guess its my blind fanboyism that keeps me away from my full time job, my girlfriend, my kids, my family that makes me stay up at night and think about all the ways that microsoft *ucks me over all the time. threatend? i don't understand that. i simply don't have to buy their system. you just have to lok at the trend buddy. all of the sudden its top priority to make all games look the same across both platforms. in most cases, the ps3 port looks worse. former ps3 exclusives have been delayed. i can't help but to wonder why that is. maybe its just the way things are. i have a hard time believing that.

fair enough. psn seems like they are trying to catch up to live. what else should they do? make an online service that uses friends codes that make it frustrating for users to play? 360 has the best online service right now. they are the ones to beat. i'll admit that they have their similarities but thats not sonys bread and butter. they have other things that they build their brand on. my point was that ms saw what the ps2 did and they are trying to do the same thing. thats not progress to me.

we agreed :)

you can't brag about how they had the most powerful system last gen and in the same breath diss the ps3 this gen. sony had major 3rd party support but all that changed when the 360 hit the market and when sony decided to charge way too much for their console. so now that 360 has major 3rd party support guess what? we are seeing more of the same. what used to be some of my favorite companies can't even sell their games anymore. i'm not seeing the progression that i would normally expect when a new system arrives on the market. is it all microsofts fault? i don't know but what i do know is that they aren't helping.

thats why microsoft is doing so well as a new contender. well thats all perception. if you like what they are doing, good for you. i personally don't. i've lived through several console battles and i've always felt like its a win win for consumers. this gen i don't. money talks. when you have a company thats willing to shell out whatever it is you need just for market share while its competitors don't have the same practices, it changes things.

again, i can't stress enough, this is just how I FEEL. if things are good for gaming, i'm all for it. i just happen to not like this company.
