Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bach: 360, PS3 have plenty of power to offer, Nintendo can't say that

I think Nintendo should do more than just do an upgrade, rather a complete new powerful console, powerful enough to emulate/upscale the original Wii games. I would like to see the market move forward, proper HDTV focuss should of course be at the core of things from such a perspective.

If so, I consider it a new console and from a technical perspective Nintendo's first current gen console. If they take this route it may well still be far less powerful than a PS3 actually (as they traditionally release mid-level or lowly specced consoles) and both consoles with improved Wii-like controls could uppen potential in terms of game quality for the route Nintendo has taken.

From a technical perspective I rather view the current Wii as a PS2 era console (which also continues to live on despite market saturation), than a 360 level console. I think a Wii-HD could be more powerful than a 360 though.

Going by US release dates:

NES - October 1985
SNES - September 1991 (6 years later)
N64 - September 1996 (5 years later)
GC - November 2001 (5 years later)
Wii - November 2006 (5 years later)
??? - Likely November 2011 or 2012

Where exactly does the Wii HD fit in here? And why would Nintendo want to fracture their userbase? Nintendo's next console release is going to be a brand new console, not Wii HD.

You know. The NES was tested in 1985 not put everywhere. It was only in New York. So basically its every 5 years

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

we can sit here and bash the wii day in and day out, but at the end of the day, Nintendo has a farm of "cash cows" that seems to be breeding at the rate of bunnies

It's even longer if you look at Japan's release dates.  Gaps go: seven years, six years, five years, five years.

Also the only company that is really making a solid profit, not recovering from past loses or not resulting in future loses.

A Wii HD would be terrible.

It would not receive much 3rd party support. Most likely it will retain some aspects made available in the Wii architecture, and most of these devs/companies have relatively no experience in progressing the power of that. It would be a huge mistake.

However, Nintendo releasing their next console a 6-12 months before the competition would be an capitalizing move.

@Garnett - The 360 & PS3 are made for a more mature audience, like Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Mass Effect, Alan Wake & Bioshock etc...etc..

They are more than just graphics. The Wii can add more accessories to compensate for lack of hardware capabilities. The Wii does have a few mature games, like Silent Hill; but the 360 & PS3 offer more in terms of downloadable content & more mature games.

Just my opinion.

@Mr. sickvisionz - Yes, Nintendo have found the 'Casual Market'.

Last time i checked the wii had a more broad audience that included ages from 5-70 than 360 & PS3 (no diss to the latter). Or do women (including my mum and gf), elder people, lapsed games etc not count as mature people now? I get it they are casuals so i guess they are not mature.... my bad

Actually, I think a Wii HD would be deluged with (sup)ports. It'd probably have the fullest launch lineup of any console ever, with most of the recent big games from most of the big publishers.
