easily my game of 2009.

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

Just finished this and must say I'm positively surprised. I won't go into details as a lot of posters did that already but i will say that SHSM is a must play, not a must buy as its quite short with very little replay value but you must experience this game. Rent it, borrow it , do whatever you want, just make sure you play it ;)

@ale666

Little replay value? It has like 5 endings =/

5 endings. Thats quite a bit of replay value. That said I think we could all agree a longer storyline would have been great. In the end though I'd rather get 7 great hours than 12 full of filler, bugs, or bad level design.

As a sidenote I picked up the PS2 release of this game and it looks great. They did a really good job making it close to the Wii  build. Sure the graphics are a slight-moderate step down, and you can tell the shadows off the flashlight are not as strong. But the game itself seems worth playing on any platform a person can get their mits on. I haven't played the PSP build but I'd expect it to be similar to the PS2 one perhaps a bit more down-rezed.

@ averyblund & Soma...Guess we just value replayability a bit differently..A different ending is not enough for me to justify going through the same content again. Would have been nice to visit some new areas while playing with a different character like lisa or cybil, like the resident evil 2nd story lines for example, then again whats there is great so its just a minor gripe ;)

Well, there are a few changes in clothes, messages, posters, etc. I agree, different paths or more different things would had been great, however I liked them and was constantly saying to myself if I had seen this before or not. It really made it more interesting to play it again and again. BTW, I already put 47 hrs in the game and still like it  =)

Edit:  Try to play it at least twice, who knows, you might be surprised :)

Yeah I totally know what you are saying. You are right on that more varied paths would be better (though they do exist to some extent already). I think the main point I was trying to make is just that I wouldn't sacrifice quality for length, not that I think you would either. Of course who knows, perhaps a few more months of dev time could have helped. I do commend them for not adding any time wasters to  inflate playtime - I'm looking at you ME2 with your damn planet scanning.

@ soma ..47hrs wow! Glad to hear you're getting your money's worth and rightly so ;) I might give myself some time to forget a few things and then go back to it with a fresh mind, perhaps I'll try the alcoholic approach this time :p

@ averyblund So mass effect 2 is not too hot after all hey, or should i say a bit over stretched? Well hopefully they won't drive another good franchise into the ground, its a sad industry trend nowadays unfortunately. And you're right, quality over length any day but i have to say that replayability is also an important sign of quality especially in terms of value for money ;)

Whatever the case may be , a must have experience on the Wii......a nice rhyme too :p

Well I just (finally) started the game, and so far so good. What really has me wondering so far is the people that have issues with the nightmare sequences. So far I don't see how anyone could have any issues with that part. The controls in the nightmare sequences work absolutely fine (the best advice is just do the motion, don't flail) and adding a weapon to the mix would have absolutely voided the effect of these sequences, which are (imo) what true survival horror is all about. You do have the occasional flare, which gives you a brief respite (when you manage to reach one...), as effective as a gun with a total of 6 bullets.

As to being scary - I play this at night, all alone, and without going into spoilers, even in the "normal" world, where no monsters can jump at you supposedly, I find the moments where the static rises, as one approaches a focal point, quite tension building. And the camera moments even more so - quite spooky/disturbing,

Just to clarify- Mass Effect 2 is awesome and the planet scanning is pretty much my only complaint. Luckily its not required, but it is pretty strongly advised that do a little if you want the best endings or the best gear. It was a stupid idea but I forgive it because the rest of the game is just amazing, and this from somebody who thought ME1 was fun but unremarkable. ME2 has been my biggest surprise thus far this year. Unlike Bioshock 2 which I just finally suffered through a few hours ago- boring repetitive combat, uninspired story, weaker art (than BS1), and terrible multiplayer coupled with an aging engine make it vastly less enjoyable to me than the first. They even have their own form of planet scanning with the neverending little sister harvesting where enemies seemingly come out of nowhere (dead ends). Oh and did I mention the enemy variety is super weak? Personally I thought it was a mediocre FPS with some so-so RPG elements tacked on. Sadly most of the plasmids and tonics are pretty useless. The only good thing I can say is that it is short. And yes I know I'm in the minority on this one. Sorry for the OT rant.
