Forums - Sales Discussion - So we see that this site undertracks the XBOX 360- why?

Ok weird analogy pls dont ban me.

Microsoft says he has a penis lenght of 8.25 inches. But you're not allowed to measure it. You can only judge his length roughly when he gets a hard on.

Sony says he has a penis length of 7.51 inches and you're allowed to use a wooden ruler to measure it. As we know wooden rulers aren't exactly the most accurate tool to measure length of well, Sony's "wood" but at least it gives u a rather accurate measure of sony's "wood".

So in short, i feel that measurements of "Real" number of console sold for both Sony and MS are accurate but somehow the numbers of Sony is more accurate cuz you track amt sold vs MS's amount shipped.

I hope i make sense lol.

I think Reach's problem is he wants the gap between 360 and PS3 to be reset back to before the Slim's release. Sorry, but it's just not going to happen. Also the 3.8 mil stated by Sony is an estimate of retail sales to customer. Just check out the orignal source as posted by Key2001. It also states that it exceeds 3.8 mil, so VGC look like they are right on the money.

When I was new here I was kinda ticked at the numbers, because I didn't know that companies gave shipment numbers, not retail sale numbers. But once I figured that out, I love this site. I haven't seen where they have been terribly wrong, and need a huge adjustment of say, oh I don't know, 1.4 mil.

As far as NPD goes, they do the same thing this site must, estimate. As people have stated before, Wal-mart and some other stores don't release weekly or monthly info anymore. So they have to estimate those sales they have no info for. Honestly, I think most people go with NPD is because it's been around longer, and in doing so has become the industry standard. Though that has started to change, as Guinness used VGC data for their recent video game record book. Also, I have never heard any good reason as to why NPD would be more accurate with their guesses.

Also Reach, I highly doubt that when Sony releases its official Q3 numbers (those will be shipped, too) You'll be screaming for VGC to correct the number to make them higher. On a side note, I find it kinda funny that while Sony and Nintendo are touting estimated actual retail sales, MS is relying on shipped numbers to make it seem more impressive. But judging by Reach and Algorith's posts, I guess it worked.

I can honestly, truly, 100% accurately say that I would never have thought of it that way.

I was happier that way.

Going to repost this again as it appears some people missed it.

The discrepancy between VGC's reported figure and Microsoft's sold to retailer figure are the nature of the beast and not due to any intentional number fudging on the part of the site.

Here are a few key facts to consider.

1. VGC can only estimate actual sales due simply to the impossibility of tracking every single sale across the globe. The methodology is similar to that of NPD, Chart-Track/GfK, Media Create and Famitsu. Poll a portion of the retail market and extrapolate.

2. Coverage. Microsoft sells the X360 to some markets that VGC does not cover.

3. Retail channel stuffing. In 2006, 2008 and so it appears this year as well, MS pushes out as many units as possible. Even more than consumer end retail can sustain.

4. Distributors. This is an industry segment not many consider. Technically, the big 3 don't sell directly to retailers but instead to distribution companies that then sell to retail. This is why MS can ship out more product that retail is willing to buy and stock and the largest reason for big discrepancies such as this.

I read it:) but I think it's just one of those threads.

im thinking of a word that may get me banned.. so no to that!

ot: if you are mad at vgchartz then why come on here? when things arent going how you want them dont point your finger dude. im pretty sure you are upset because you want the 360 numbers to be higher.

So, Nintendo penis size=16 inches?

ahhhh, the beauty of the idiocracy of low count posters. I try not to use post count as a measure of common sense, but in this thread there seems to be a slight trend going on here *chuckles*

I'll be over here grabbing more popcorn.

Not saying the opening poster is correct.

Yet one thing in this thread is new to me and hard to believe. It has been posted that at the end of 2008 MS stuffed the channel and some claiming they did again this year. It is very hard to believe that at the end of 2008 that any retailer would allow MS to stuff the channel. As bad as the economy is today it was worse at the end of 2008. So channel stuffing in 2008 and 2009 is very hard to believe. Retailers have to pay for those units sitting in their warehouses/backrooms.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Working in stock myself i can say, we have a lot back there. A whole cell is just xbox's. Nintendo and Sony share the same cell and while nintendo does sell more we get shipments more frequently so it's always at a good qouta.

Edit: Oh and i work stock at toys r' us.

I love the numbers that are being pulled here? A 3 million unit gap? Can you add and subtract? 39 - 36.77 = 2.33mil. This is no where near 3 mil. Also, taking into account VGC has yet to include data from Japan and NA for the last week, this number will be around 2mil. 2 mil units on shelves post-holiday season? Why not? Think about this... Maybe MS thought they would sell more than they did, and that why there are around 2mil units on shelves.. -__- Anyways, people here have put forth many reasons why you are wrong, so please, just shut it.
