Forums - Sales Discussion - GI.biz: TOP Selling Games of 2010 - Halo Reach #1, FFXIII #2, GT5 #10!!

Terrible list. It shows the general and pitiful state of video gaming journalism when they don't have a single nintendo game in the top list. Here's mine:

1. StarCraft II
2. Call of Duty 7
3. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
4. Gran Turismo 5
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2
6. Pokemon HG/SS
7. Halo: Reach
8. Final Fantasy XIII
9. FIFA 11
10. BioShock 2

- Starcraft should sell over 15 millions due to the extreme popularity of both Starcraft and Blizzard brands. I think this might be the final push for the growth of pro gaming in the western world.

- Call of Duty 7 perhaps won't sell as well as World at War because of the success of Modern Warfare 2, which could interfere in the sales of COD7.

- Cataclysm will sell millions in the first 24 hours, then continue selling for years. No doubt it will sell over 10 millions.

- GT5 could sell near 10 millions. Very anticipated.

- SMG2 maybe 6 to 8 million?

- Pokemon HG/SS are a rehash of older versions, so it won't sell like the original pokemon games do.

- Halo: Reach won't sell anywhere near Halo 3, and both Halo ODST and Halo Wars have sold only a fraction of Halo 3.

- FFXIII will sell well, maybe even more than Halo Reach. We'll see.

- Fifa 11 and Bioshock 2 could be around 4 or 5 millions.

this list is laughable, but here are my thoughts (world wide lifetime sales, so 2010 and on sales)

* 1. Halo: Reach - could do 10m
* 2. Final Fantasy XIII - Do we count Japanese sales? If So, why isn't NSMBWii on the list it launched in 2009 too Overall western market 3.5m units (6m total with Japan)
* 3. StarCraft II - no comment, but I'm sure this will move a lot
* 4. Call of Duty 7 - 10m combined
* 5. FIFA 11 - 8m combined. (if this is US only, these guys are on some serious drugs)
* 6. BioShock 2 - 3m combined, doesn't really deserve to be on the list.
* 7. Mass Effect 2 - 2-3m doesn't deserve to be on the list
* 8. God of War III - 3m doesn't deserve to be on the list.
* 9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - what? this isn't a 2010 game. where is NSMBWii, Mario Kart, or Wii Fit?
* 10. Gran Turismo 5 - 8-10m, just don't understand why it is on the bottom.

games missing

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 7-8m
Zelda Wii - 5m (could easily do more, giving pessimistic prediction), more deserving than those 2-3m games
Wii Vitality ??? (heck, every other peripheral took off, so whatever )
Pokemon Gold/Silver 6m in western markets (pessimistic view due to remake status, also are we counting portables?)

Also, any of the continually selling Wii or DS games could easily bump those 2-3m sellers out of the list if we aren't counting games released before 2010, however Modern Warfare is in the list, so I don't know what to think.

Does FIFA sell so much cos it's on many platforms? (is it on Wii PSP and stuff, along with HD+PS2?)

R u serious about FF13 sales. Only 3,5 mil in the West? I thought the last FF sold like 5 mill in the West, but I may be wrong, i forgot lol. So being the first FF in a very long time, on a new gen, and on two consoles should lift the sales from the last FF.

Unless I made a mistake, I put FFXIII above FFXII sales and picked it as the 4th best selling ever. Seems reasonable to me. 2.5m in Japan, 3.5m in the west. Obviously I could be off, but it is a rough estimate.

But crap, I forgot the X360 version, so... maybe higher? I don't know if being multiplatform will help this title or not.

you are OFF by a bit

FFXIII should sell no less than 7 million at absolute minimum, I expect 9 - 10 million

to make 7 million it will do

2.5 million in japan + 4.5 Million in the west

eventually I expect:

2.5 Million in Japan + 7 Million in the west!!!!!! (thats LTD including all re-releases at the end of this gen)

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised Darth.

hopefully my FFXIII prediction fails like my original uncharted 2 one!!!

if that happens FFXIII will be at 9.5 million within 2 months!

What the...Darth, you ain't no little boy anymore...you gotta start acting serious :D

Anyways I'm predicting 6.5 million on both consoles. 5 million on PS3 and 1.5 million on 360. Though I would love to see it do more!

so you expect this to be the best selling FF ever? (no surprise really, and I'm sure your 7m in the west proves a remake is coming ) Everything I've read from others says that JRPGs are in a decline. Of course, FF won't have the same decline, but 12 didn't even break 6, so a jump to 10 seems unreasonable to me.

I can see 7m total, 6m was more of a probable minimum, but 9-10 seems a stretch.

Remember FF9 sold 5.3 Million then FF10 sold 8 Million

so FF's decline at the end of gens since the PS1 era

In this case I expect FF13's jump to be greater as its on 360 too & it will be legendary and a classic

from impressions it seems its gonna be the ultimate FF to lure newcomers to the series

I believe S-E WILL market it will, very well.

As I said 7 Million absolute minimum

your new baby will be waiting for a FFXIII remake in 18 years!

ODST = expansion pack (sorta)

Halo Wars = not even a FPS. This is like saying that Galaxy or NSMBWii won't sell because Mario Super Sluggers only sold 1m.

Halo: Reach will outperform ODST no problem, and will most likely outsell Mario Galaxy, which would move it up 2 spots on your list.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

Most people probably didn't see ODST as an expansion pack though (which it isn't anyway). I don't know, it just looks to me that Halo: Reach isn't as anticipated as ODST was. We'll see, no one's predicting the future.

Top 10 if only including 2010 releases

1. Call of duty 7 (10m+)
2. Halo Reach (8-10m)
3. Gran Turismo 5 (8-10m)
4. Starcraft 2 (A lot if pirating doesn’t hurt it)
5. FIFA 11 (7-9m)
6. Mario Galaxy 2 (6-8m)
7. Heart gold/soul Silver (6-10m potentially higher on the list)
8. FF13 (4-5m)
9. Legend of Zelda (4-6m)
10. God of war 3 (3-4m)

Vitality sensor is too much of a wild card to predict. Also Starcraft will be huge but how big I am not sure of.

Top 10 if old titles included

0. Wii sports (15-20m)
1. NSMBwii (10-15m)
2. Wii sport Resort(10-15m)
3. Wiifit plus(10-15m)
4. Call of duty 7
5. Halo Reach
6. Gran Turismo
7. Starcraft
8. FIFA 11
9. Mario Galaxy
10. Pokemon Heartgold/Soul Silver

What is funny is that according to this site pokemon was number 10 in 2009 and it looks like it will be 10th again. Then again it already looks like Heart gold/Soul Silver will be bigger than platinum. It could end up much higher.

I am not saying my list is perfect, but it is better than theirs.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

@metalmonstar

You forgot WoW: Cataclysm, which will probably sell 4 millions copies in the first 24 hours alone, and over 10 millions lifetime.

And Piracy is irrelevant to Starcraft 2 (and any PC game) when it comes to sales. No one in their right mind would play Starcraft 2 without MP, unless you're one poor motherhubber.

It's laughable that they have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 listed but no NSMBW. It's possible for NSMBW in 2010 to double the sale of MW2 in 2010.

BioShock 2? Mass Effect 2? GoW3? While these titles might turn out to be great games, there is no chance in hell that they would end up in Top 10 selling games for the year since they will need to sell at least 5 million copies to be in Top 10.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
