Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: Xbox 360 has sold 39m units

39 millions sold to customers, how many of them RROD'd though? The same goes for PS3. The HD consoles sales != install base, because the failure rate is too significant on those 2 consoles.

Don't be stupid. A few have broken and been rebought, and with the PS3, some have been bought just for watching films (I have a second one for that). However, most RRoDs are sent to M$ and they are given a replacement, which is just a refurbished console in most cases, and these are not counted in the number of consoles sold

Everytime MS, Sony etc., release a sales figure of consoles sold we also have this argument.

Then we always come to the same conclusion: It is the shipped figure.

Sold to consumers is a different sales figure.

The vgcharts supremos explained the 2.5m figure will come down due to sales not yet included on vgchartz.

Either way that is a good result for MS.

Its shipped guys. Check out the article on the front page. They are clearing out inventory to prepare for launching a X360 box that will include Natal.

No disrespect. I watched the keynote. He clearly said and referred to people buying them and having them in there homes. It wasnt the usual we've shipped x or y amount of 360's that we always here. It was clear as day. In everyday peoples homes. Said either they are outright lieing. Or our figures on this site are wrong.

Thing is I'm sure M$ have it right as they have people paid alot of money to get this sort of stuff right. One thing companies of that size rarely make a mistake on anything financial. And the stockholders would have heard the exact same info. Of which M$ can be sued for if they are wrong.

Good joke. There certainly are not 39 Million households with Xbox 360s at this time.

Additionaly, maybe Ballmer confused "shipped" with "made". Though given the past failure rates, I'd assume they made way more than 39 Million. Of course that is a number they'll never tell us.

You assume wrong.  But you have already been banned for your blatant trolling

Broken 360's get repaired one way or another and used by new people one way or another.  eBay, warranty, craigslist.... one way or another, the 360 gets used still so the number they made = the number they shipped.  Nice try though.

The really interesting question is: What is the actual install base of 360 at present?

~36.65 million

Hmmm, I just listened to the keynote (it's on Major Nelson's page) and at the 7:55 mark he says:

"Today I am pleased to tell you that there are over 39 Million Xbox 360s around the world."

So that almost certainly means shipped, not sold through. 2+ Million in the distribution channels seems awfully high though, as you'd think Microsoft's shipping algorithms would be a little more accurate than that, but what do I know.

After watching the keynote I am inclined to say VGChartz is off. The words were very clear in the keynote. " Since we launched xbox 360 I am pleased to tell you there are more than 39 million around the world."

Word for word.

I don't believe they have sold over 39 million units. They couldn't have, otherwise the xbox 360 would have outsold the playstation 3 on a monthly basis since the launch of the playstation 3 slim.

There is no way VGC undertracked the 360 by 2.4 Million.

There is also no way the 360 outsold the PS3 worldwide since the Slim.

39+ is higher than I expected. and I don't buy that they are clearing inventory ... 9 months before a potential release date? possibly 11 ....? nah.

true story.

Don't get me worng, VGC did an awesome job with the PS3 numbers. Probably the biggest success for VGC ever. Now it looks like they undertracked the XBox 360 a bit.

Last financial results (Q1 2010) VGC underestimated the Xbox 360 shipments by 200k and did not adjusted anything. It is understandable, because 200k is not that big deal.
Now it looks like there are 2.5 million consoles @ retail 2 weeks after xmas... Please notice that Steve Ballmer said "more than 39 million Xbox 360s" Even with the one week of data missing there might be like 2.2 million consoles at retail according to VGC.

the new release date for the speculated SKU (we don't even know if there will be a new SKU at all! This is just a guess made be TheSource.) is 10 months away... why should they clean inventory in January for a holiday release?

I think the Xbox360 might be undertracked by 400k - 500k units.

No point worrying over numbers, if there are big adjustments that need to be made then they'll happen eventually.  I think the 360 has been undertracked in others but time will tell.  In fairness the same thing was said about the PS3 last year and that got adjusted if I remember correctly.

The numbers are definately shipped though as there is no way the site is millions out.
