It is called homebrew!  Some people just love their consoles.  This is not done for money.

There are games being made for the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, and Jaguar. There are games being made for the Intellivision, Colecovision, Odyssey 2 (Videopac). [I have homebrew for all but the 5200 and Jag).

Yea, last year the folks in Brazil who Sega allowed to make the Dreamcast, Genesis etc released new Genesis games, but the Dreamcast is different as Sega themselves published official DC games as late as 2007. could you imagine Nintendo publishing a New Gamecube game in 2012.

Most of the games released after Sega dropped the Dreamcast were Shooters(smups),three were ported over to the GCN-"Ikaruga"(best ever?), "Chaos Field" and "Radirgy"(Japan only), one to the PS2 "Shikigami no Shiro 2", and one to XBOX-Live "Trigger Heart Exelica" or THE. Thankfully one of my favourites "Zero Gunner 2" is still an exclusive. All of the games were only released in Japan, so most of the rest being Dating Sims were unplayable for most of us. The last Sega developed and published game"Puyo Puyo Fever" was released in 2004, three years after they had dropped tthe DC.

With the 10th Anniversary of it's most successful launch(NA)09/09/99=09/09/09 it has been a Banner year, as the developers seemed to have timed their releases fairly close to that date. I have played 4 out of the 5 with the latest one(Irides) throwing a few DC fans for a loop. For a fine read please check out this thread;

My copy is on it's way, I can't wait to play Lumines and Irides side by side to see the differences between them, it should be interesting.

I was informed that 'Wind&water' was released late 2008, so it should not be on the list, it is a great game with No votes, proving that I can't pull the wool over your eyes(not that I was trying to).

Meanwhile, R4 takes a two vote lead on the next game.

The Dreamcast died (For me and millions of SEGA fans) in February of 2002 upon the release of NHL 2k2.

Every game for the Dreamcast released after that shouldn't and don't exist to me.

There is no money to be made in PS2 homebrew development either. Homebrew development is a labour of love, not about making money. Yes some PS2 games still sell well but they have proper distribution, they sell in actual stores. Amateur developers don't have the name value to get their games licensed by Sony. Which means, their games won't be available in stores. If you want to start your own company to develop and sell video games, your best bet as an indie developer starting out is the PC. A number of indie PC game developers (ie. Adam Ryland, Cliff Harris) have been able to make a living by turning their hobby into a self-employed full-time profession Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo require that you actually have some sort of established reputation before they even consider licensing your game so console development is not the way to go if you are just starting out. Whereas anyone can create a PC game and sell it on the internet.

That said, with the Indie Games feature in Xbox Live, the console environment is becoming more friendly to amateur development. But nowhere near as much as PC (you have total freedom within the PC environment, which you don't have with consoles as a developer). I don't consider XBLA, PSN and Wiiware to be amateur developer friendly since you do need a certain level of reputation/name value for Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo to consider licensing you. If you make a name for yourself with a great Indie game with critical acclaim and lots of sales, you can be upgraded to XBLA status though (ie. The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai)

For a lot of us, the Dreamcast died with Sega's announcement on January 31 2001 that they were halting production, and releasing games on other consoles.

NHL 2k2 may have been the last game released in NA, but the PAL and Japanese fans were still getting new releases after then, some quite good and easy to play on a NA console.

All the new releases are on cd-roms, so they are region free and will play on almost all of the DC's.

Very well put, all of the Dreamcast games were a labour of love, and it would seem that the Wii game I'm playing also fits into that category(Little King's Story).

There is also a New Freeware Dreamcast game availiable called "Primative Nightmare", and Yes it is called Primative for a reason. Google is your friend with this game.

 

Meanwhile DUX is giving R4 a good run, but R4 has raced out a 3 vote lead.
