Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is your position on spoilers?

I don't really mind spoilers too much, it doesn't really make the game any less satisfying to me if I already know what's going to happen.

If the game really is quality, a spoiler couldn't ruin it anyway.

Well... if someone would have spoiled: "I'm your father" from the Empire Strikes Back I would have killed that person..

I hate anime & movie spoilers.Nintendo games.....I don't mind storyline spoilers but I totally hate gameplay spoilers(weapon upgrades, dungeon or level designs, etc).Oh,and I hate being told how to solve a puzzle or get a well hidden item before I even get there. For games like Metal Gear or RPG games(usually focus a lot on story),I totally hate spoilers!

My thread for teaching VGC some Nigerian slangs

Hate them for most genres... especially JRPG's.

Around the Network

I used to not mind them much.

Till somebody spoiled the identity of one of the Cylons. It fucked me up.

Now I avoid them like the plague. Specially for JRPGs.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

If you mean spoilers in general. I dislike it a lot. I mean if my sister plays the game before and I begin to play it she would then come in the room and tell me how to beat this particular boss or tell me what's going to happen with this character and such. It was annoying back in my younger days (13-17) but as I got older I would give her the face and she would know

Also I don't like using strategy guides on my first play through if that's what you mean by spoilers also. It's rather annoying to have someone hold your hand going through a game where as if you play the game yourself and suddenly bump into a boss then the excitement builds and that's what makes a connection between you and the game exciting. Unless you die

But all in all spoilers suck and I will stay away from FFXIII reviews when the release is nearing.

Spoilers come in two varieties:

The early spoiler - This is a spoiler for something you learn between 1 minute and some early but arbitrary time into the game/TV show/book etc.  These are the kinds of things that you usually see in previews, game intros, and other media.  It's a spoiler in that it tells you something about the game you did not know, but it's not telling you anything you wouldn't have found out right away. I don't really mind these.  Usually they motivate me to play the game (otherwise people wouldn't be telling me about them).

The late spoiler - This is well past that early but arbitrary time.  This is well into the game.  This tells you that XYZ is coming, ABC event happens, TGF character dies, and KFC is yummy.  This generally ruins some element of surprise in the game.  I try and avoid these like the plague not just because it ruins the surprise but it makes me wonder just when it's going to happen.  If someone shows you a cutscene of someone dying in a video game, you spend the entire game wondering when it happens.  You emotionally cut off that character to avoid getting hurt feelings later and you lose an element that would have otherwise been enjoyable.

Okay well I can relate to both of the early and late spoiler because I was watching the DVD sets for the TV show "The OC" and all I did was go on Wikipedia to find out how many episodes were on that particular DVD set and I somehow got real deep into reading what happened in the episodes and found out a particular character named Marissa dies and that she will not be returning in Season 4.

Oh mate that pissed me off so bad! And I could not really gain any interest in the series after that, just because I knew she was about to die and I found this out at Season 2

So that ruined my whole experience with that issue.

I don't like them, although of course it depends on the game (or film or book).

For example, I'm not going to be too shocked to know Mario rescues Princess Peach (until the next game anyway), nor would I be surprised to learn the Decepticons are defeated (until the next sequel anyway) in Transformers.

However, I would be annoyed to have story details of ICO revealed, or Uncharted 2, or Moon, or District 9.

What annoys me more than spoilers is someone deliberately spoiling something that will annoy people just for kicks. Those are people I'd like to kick!

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
