PS triple would have dominated if released the same time as 360. You also have to take into account that for an entire year Late 2005 to late 2006 the 360 had no next gen competition. If the PS3 had been there as an option then 360 sales would be even lower as well as PS3 sales being higher.

But there would have been no games for the PS3 in 2005 and possibly no RSX included if they planned to release it alongside the 360.  It's a double edged sword.  If the PS3 launched at the same time as the 360, it would likely be in a much worse state as far as overall performance without the RSX and the first year sales would have been much lower.  If the 360 would have launched a year later with the PS3, it could have corrected the RRoD (which in my opinion is about the only thing that has kept the PS3 so close to the 360 in sales.  Without the RRoD the 360 would have sold much better), added more performance or just kept the same hardware and made it launch at an even cheaper price.

Too many unknowns to make a generalization either way.

so....

launches aligned, and all other factors counted, we learn that the big clear winner is nintendo (this gen.)

while the battle for 2nd place is as heated as ever with no clear winner between the 360 and ps3...

Pretty much.  Launch aligning doesn't correlate to real world application, had 360 and PS3 both launched simultaneously so many variables would've shifted that there's no way the current trends would've applied.  I tend to think 360 would've done better upfront with an extra year for prep (and HD-DVD might still be alive), and PS3 would've done worse upfront if forced to hit market a year earlier.

That is very true, good post. I guess things are fine the way they are!

Great stuff, I would just love to see the numbers of PS3 and 360 released at the same time, also if you take that year to year and a half head start 360 had , the numbers would really be different, but as a gamer and owning both PS3 and 360 for most I just want to see a good comp all around, that means better games for all of us. I am more PS3 pro, I love there games, network and controller.

VGChartz actually makes this possible:

Based on aligned launches which apparently makes the consoles sales war fair.

1. PS3 is selling 53,000 more than the 360 every week on average in the Japan and Others regions. Japan and Others regions Sony is seen as superior to Microsoft and relies heavily on its former glory of the PS1/PS2. JRPGs and popular established franchises maintain PS3s edge over the 360 in weekly sales in these two regions. The gap between Sony and Microsoft has narrowed considerably when comparing the previous console generation to the present console generation.

Japan: PS3 sells 5 systems to every 1 360 system sold in weekly sales. Last generation 25 PS2s were sold to one XBox in weekly sales.

Others: PS3 sells 3 systems to every 2 360 systems sold. Not much a difference but a win is a win. Last generation the PS2 sold considerably more than the XBox. Ratio of around 20 PS2s sold to every XBox sold. The 360s UK success of this generation keeps the battle close with PS3 in Others region. 5 million 360s have reportedly been sold in UK alone this generation.

2. 360 is selling 24,500 more than the PS3 ever week on average in the North American region. FPS games on 360 and XBox Live combined with Microsoft marketing campaigns on home soil keeps the 360 above the PS3 in weekly sales. North America region keeps the 360 competitive with the PS3 and ensures that there will be a third XBox next generation. 20 million XBox 360s have been reportedly sold in North America. 360 sells 4 systems to every 3 PS3 sold in weekly sales.

3. Overall PS3 is selling 28,500 more than the 360 every week on average in worldwide sales. Resulting in 1.5 million more PS3s have been sold worldwide than XBox 360s.

4. Wii has been the run away success story this generation. The Wii has sold at a faster rate than the PS2 of last generation and it should easily break 100 million sales within 5 years. A feat which took the PS2 over 6 years to accomplish. The Wii sales are well ahead of both PS3 and 360 sales combined in all three sales regions: Japan, Others and North America.

5. Nintendo leads the way with innovation by bringing something new to the table with the motion control device which has revolutionised the video game industry. The PS3 and X360 have stuck to their usual formula and focused mainly on online and best graphics in video games.

Not bad, PS3 is really doing well after the slim release and price cuts. Just goes to show you how good the PS3 actually is.
