Most FF fans are "RPG casuals" since FF's are quite casual RPG's.

Go look up Pokemon's sales then point and laugh at Final Fantasy.  RPGs are, mostly, still niche outside of a few.

Honestly I do not understand what the hell people see in pokemon, unless they are 12. The very first one was fine, ok maybe the second one was still ok but it just got ridiculous to me.

Back on topic, I really believe that alot of good and better rpg's go overlooked because of Final Fantasy. I mean look at Vagrant Story, that game was a masterpiece. Also Valkyrie Profile1, 2, xenogears, breath of fire, lunar, shadow hearts 1 and 2, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross. I mean damn, most of those games I would beat at LEAST 2-3 times (more if it's Chrono series).

This reminds me of the classic example of Zelda on the NES when The Magic of Scheherazade was a FAAAAR superior game to Zelda 1 and 2.

BTW, does anyone remember a gem called Brave Fencer Musashi?

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

Pokemon Red and Blue were amazingly original games at the time.  I actually got all 150 in blue; My friend got red.  After that they become old and boring after the re-released the same game under different names.

What about Mass Effect and Fallout 3 ?

Both Fallout 3 and Mass Effect looks more shooter to me than RPG. This is the main reason I didn't put them on the list, but then again this is just my opinion but I will edit soon

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, finally someone that is not a blinded fanboy. Yes Red and Blue were in fact fun at the time. Reading this topic I realize how many great games go severely underappreciated do to blind following and blind loyalty. I have seen series come out that either do not improve or drop in quality. Best example would be Zelda. After Ocarina of Time, it just went down hill, yet I see people crying when they see 1 picture of Link for the next Zelda game. Final Fantasy seems to have suffered from this also. I loved the fact that FF IX went back to the FF roots but after than ....People really need to stop being so close minded and see what other gems are out there, I mean I could make an extensive list of games from the NES all the way to the PS3/360/Wii: The Magic of Scheherazade, Xexyz, Kid Chameleon, Blue's Journey, Chrono Trigger (yes, just look at the sales of the original on SNES), Chrono Cross, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Bonk, Guilty Gear Series, Blazblue, Brave Fencer Musashi, Koudelka, Kartia, Vagrant Story, Demon's Souls, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, etc, etc, etc.

Well in Oblivion you have a bow and you shoot things too. The gameplay is VERY similar to Fallout 3, but instead of swords you have.... well swords and other melee weapons and instead of a bow and magic you have guns.

Just because a game has swords, doesn't make it automatically a RPG. Same applies to guns and shooters. (Resonance of Fate for example)
