Background:
- Sony recently took three measures in the PAL market - introducing the 40 GB PS3 model, cutting the price of the Starter Pack (60 GB model with 2 games and 1 extra controller) as a stock clearing measure, and discontinuing said starter pack.
According to reports from several European countries, the 60 GB starter pack has been selling out in many countries, and it seems more and more scarce, even to the point of not being restocked in many retailers. Unlike what most people expected, it seems that stock of the 60 GB PS3 was more reduced than previously thought. The fact that many gamers were scared of losing backwards compatibility also contributed to a sales spike in the past three weeks or so.
According to vgchartz's latest update to Others weekly sales, PS3 sales have nearly decreased to their values before the cost-cutting measures. If this is due to the 60 GB model selling out (as evidence in several countries points to, including the report that the 40 GB model only accounted for about 10% of PS3 sales in UK if I recall correctly), does that mean that Sony won't have a spectacular Christmas in these territories?
If so, the only thing Sony can do is introduce the 80 GB model with BC before Christmas, which can't probably be done unless they were planning in advance for it.
