Wii easy. I think next year will probably see Wii take an even larger lead due to the sustaining effect of WSR, WF, and NSMB which will probably be the biggest game in Japan this gen. I don't think FFXIII will have an ever green impact (we'll see) and what else does PS3 have in the pipeline for Japan in 2010? PS3 did have a solid year but look at all that had to happen in Japan this year for PS3 to even put up a good fight against a struggling Wii year;

They had RE5, SF4, The Slim remodel/100$ Price cut and FFXIII..Thinking about it, could 2009 be PS3's peak year? Or is it the begining?

But the funny thing is a year ago if I were to say the PS3 will have similar sales to the Wii in Japan for the year I'd probably get banned for talking about such foolishness lol

Wii takes it, barely, thanks to the combination of Wii stalling/holding and PS3 surging off the slim. I think it'll be the same story next year, unless we get an iterative "Wii Plus" or whatever.

PSP fell off massively this year too, despite GO. DSi/LL kept DS afloat. 360 is R.I.P.

I'll say the Wii by a small margin, but as everyone has said the PS3 had a very good year in Japan.

Actually, I'm more curious if Wii can match PSP for 2009? It's under 400k behind YTD, there's 2 weeks left, and last week it sold well over 100k more.

Early 2010 is pretty good for PS3. PS3 has a bunch of smaller RPGs, Yakuza 4, GT5, and SO4 port. Second half there's nothing yet but it'd be hard to think 2010 second half will be as strong as 2009 considering the Slim released and FF XIII did too.

Suppose there's a chance of FFXIII Versus next Christmas in Japan.

But you're right - Q3/4 don't have anything solid yet.

They also had plenty of 8k weeks, how quickly we forget how bad the PS3 sold before the Slim.

January 2009, the PS3 was already down to 16k per weeks.
