Forums - Gaming Discussion - What genre dominates your current generation games?

The "are you sick of FPS" thread made me wonder about how diverse my game collection was, so I put together this little table from my current generation offerings. As a note, I generally used VGChartz genre classification, but moved some games to more appropriate genres like Action Adventure for Zelda.

Platformer & Action Adventure take the top 2 spots, which really doesn't surprise me considering how much I love Mario & Zelda, which have 4 & 3 games in each genre respectively.

DS Wii PS3 Total
Platformer 1 4 2 7
Action Adventure 2 2 1 5
Puzzle 3 2   5
Sports   5   5
Strategy 3 1 1 5
Racer   2 2 4
Fitness   3   3
Shooter 2 1   3
Action RPG 1 1   2
Adventure 1 1   2
Edutainment 1 1   2
Fighter   1 1 2
Party   2   2
Music/Rhythm 1 1   2
Action     1 1
FPS     1 1
RPG 1     1

2 Third Person Shooters

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

Easily the fps and tps. Shooters never get old because they are the most social genre. I get tired of playing solo platformers, rpg's. Yet, I will admidt I love the solo experience of open world games.

These are for the games that I own, not counting VC:

DS  Wii
Total
Platformer  6 11
17
Action Adventure  3 7
10
Puzzle  4 2    6
Action RPG  3 1    4
Music/Rhythm  1 3    4
Sports  0 3    3
Strategy  1 2
3
Shooter  0 3    3
Adventure  1 2    3
Party  1 2    3
RPG  3 0    3
Racer  1 1
2
Fitness  0 2    2
Fighter  0 2

FPS  0 2

Not surprisingly, Platformers and Action-Adventures are my bread and butter with this generation, as it is with every generation.

<3 Platformers

I think FPS and horror are the two most common themes in my collection.

I'll probably do this in a bit.

I'm sure action/adventure, RPG, and FPS are high up there.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

I sorted your list Smeags (excel rocks). It seems we generally have similar tastes, but you have more games, and I have a higher concentration of strategy games (I have 4 from the GBA that I bought in the last 2 years too).

Lol! I was wondering how my post suddenly went in numerical order. The magic of VGC knows no bounds.

Yep, we're pretty similar indeed. Platformers and Action Adventures contain some truly wonderful games, so it's not very surprising.

I'm not at home so I can't confirm yet, but I think it's mainly FPS, Adventure/Platform, RPGs and Strategy, in that order. Actually, racing games might be ahead of strategy now I think about it.

Now, although I've got more FPS' I think I've enjoyed RPGs and adventure/platform games this gen. The bar as far as RPGs are concerned has really been raised to a new level.
