That's not true, Son. I had a copy of it a very long time ago which somehow got lost before I got very far into the game.

Aeris death, I was like: WTF, that cannot be true, Cloud do something, SAAAVVVEEE HHHHEEER
The Kingdom in FF VI, I was like: Kefka is really a badarse, that guy is just crazy
The children in FF IV, I was like: I will come back and save you later, your sacrifices shall not go in vane.
Edit: And one more thing, those other death you kind of see them coming and were in 2D and Aeris death was in 3D and Cinematic

Using Tellah instead ;) |
What?!?! You're not helping your case, Tellah is horribly bad.
He only has 90 MP and his wisdom & will power are laughably low making his spells so weak.

In FF5 a player character is killed to.
More people care about FF7... because they played it first.
Also... the Phantom Train moment is far sadder then anything in 7.
FF7 was amusingly just following a trend of playable characters dieing in FF. (two die in FF6 to.)

No no no no no. This is where you got it all wrong. Aerith dying was big because she was to be one of the most CRUCIAL MAIN characters in the game as far as importance went. Best example, picture having Spiderman fight villains for a long time as we follow that comic and all of a sudden out of NOWHERE BAM MJ gets killed. I endured FF1 with the same midi music that NEVER changed even for boss fights. It's like a Romeo and Juliet story where only Juliet dies. Aside from it being the first CG instance where we see something like that happen. She was the heroine of the story, and the way the story was written, they lead you to believe in the end it's Cloud and Aeris to stay together and be happy. The only other instance that could have rivaled that is if Squall at the very end of FFVIII would have died in Rinoa's arms.
Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)
I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/ hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.
Not this again..
It's simple, how can we give a crap about a kindgom in FFVI where we aren't introduced to anyone on a personal level.
We didn't know Cyan on a personal level before that, and we never got to know his family well enough. Why should anyone care? There's no substantial backing for that.
It's not what happens, it's how it happens. Keep that in mind.
You got to know Aeris throughout the game, her opinions, her interactions her personality etc.
Forget about if you liked Aeris or not, there's a lot of detail presented with her on a personal level involving her mother, her Ancient status, and her interactions with everyone in the party.
That's why her death is significant. The manner that it happened in was also significant. Great execution (not talking about just her death) of music and cinema/gameplay after wards.

You probably had NTSC version and played it on a modded/imported PS1/2.
edit: Why does everyone call me by weird names? Son, seriously? (you and Soriku) or s0n1x (lestat)...
Were people really that shocked when Aeris died? (Aerith? who's that?) I wasn't shocked at all really myself..then again, a lot of people talk about shocking video game moments and I can't remember ever really being 'shocked' about any video game. I didn't care that she died cuz I thought Tifa was hotter anyway, so I felt like it made it easier on my character (Cloud) to decide who to 'be with'..lol.

THe thing with Sephiroth burning the village, it just didn't seem to matter. The act of burning the village was overshadowed by other things and you just didn't think about that, you were thinking about Sephiroth what the fuck he was up to and what was Cloud's past. You were just so disconnected from it. With Kefka and Doma, it was purely focused on Kefka and his horrible act. Later, you directly experienced the aftermath of that act and it was just an incredibly moving piece. Everything you did, Cyan in Doma, the camp, and the phantom train, was all because of what Kefka did. Watch my above link if you don't believe me. |
The aftermath happens, but regardless we didn't get to know Cyan's family that well; nor Cyan to feel any impact on a personal level.
After all, how can we as humans be moved to something we haven't had enough time to become attached to? It doesn't just instantly happen, it takes time to build these important moments and then finally let them explode. Interactions are what generally build these moments, and while FFVI did indeed have a lot of good moments, most of them happened too soon.

No, it was PAL. I didn't have a modded PS2 back then. I swear on the name of Nintendo that FF6 was released on the PSX in PAL. Wikipedia backs me up, too.
