Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is it that the Modern Warfare 2 "No Russian" scene went too far?

You have the outright option to skip that scene entirely.  And if you don't skip it, you are not forced to pull the trigger of your gun.  They never even explicitly tell you to kill anyone or try to hold you to some sort of duty... the only thing they say is "Remember, no Russian."

There is a cut scene leading up to it...

In that they talk about how morality is blurred, sometimes you just have to do horrific things to save larger numbers of people etc., I can't remember exactly what they say but I got the distinct impression that I was being expected to do something morally "grey" (it's not really that grey at all) in the next section.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

idk, but the scene sucked...if im going to be a terrorist i should be able to run around and knife people in the face.

Oh, that was the commander/general talking to you, not the terrorists.  That's just being realistic as you don't expect CIA or undercover agents to always do what's "right" do you?  The whole part of being so deap undercover is that you have to be believable.

As for the actual mission, no one says or forces you to do anything.  It's entirely your choice.

u play as a terrorist killing innocent people in the biggest game of this gen. hummm i wonder

Actually you are an undercover CIA agent from what people have been telling me.

I don't think it went too far at all. Actually knowing the story, I don't even find it that controversial nor disturbing. Hell I opened fire and completed the mission no biggie. I can understand how maybe some might find the issues and subject to be a little disturbing, but that doesn't mean you can twist reality. It is a video game and not real and know you are not the one doing it. Don't pull a Jack Thompson on me haha.

And I agree, it is not even close to some of the other things you do in other games. I mean you are just an undercover agent and it works with the story. No problem with it whatsoever and I think they could have got away with it making everyone do it. They don't make you skip such scenes in movies so why in video games.

It didn't, I didn't see a CNN or NBC special about a game where "You play as terrorists". It was only Fox trying to make conterversy and it didn't work and now nobody cares, only the rating boards.

Why is this one picked on so much when in Assassin's Creed you ruthlessly kill people, in Uncharted 2 you kill hundreds of people, in Final Fantasy VI a whole nation is poisoned because one guy is impatient, in Mass Effect you can choose to let hundreds of people die because you don't want to do sidequests, in GTA you can run around killing innocent people all you want, and so on.

1. In games like Assassin's Creed and Uncharted your killing "bad guys" which is different because your killing innocent bystandards in No Russian.

2. GTA gets shit from the media all the time, I don't know why you mentioned it.

I didn't really get the whole 'controversial' thing.

I just shot everything that moved.

yup, the sotry is so stupi that nothing really matters

The difference between GTA and Modern Warfare is that GTA is satire through and through. On the other hand MW is an over the top take on a very real subject with presentation that are as life-like as I can imagine. IMO, No Russian was not in poor taste. It was meant to bring up questions.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
