Forums - Gaming Discussion - Insomniac's Brian Hastings speaks out on the PS3

Hmm... I agree that the console wars won't be decided in 18 months... They were decided 18 months ago...

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

They're notable for developing: Spyro the Dragon (Published by Sony) Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Published by Sony) Spyro: Year of the Dragon (Published by Sony) Ratchet & Clank (Published by Sony) Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (Published by Sony) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (Published by Sony) Ratchet: Deadlocked (Published by Sony) Resistance: Fall of Man (Published by Sony) And are currently developing: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (Published by Sony) Resistance 2: Rise of Man (Published by Sony) They have always produced games for Sony Platforms and (with the exception of 1 game) Sony has always been their publisher.
Thanks, it explains why I never heard of them or him..

dude said what many already knew.

HappySqurriel said: "Never" is a bad word to use when every week the Wii has more titles in many of these genres announced or released; certainly, many of these games have been awful but it hasn't stopped developers from trying.
Like what? Care to name a few? The last time I checked, the Wii's most anticipated titles were first-party. Super Paper Mario, Mario, Mario Party 8, Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, etc. Even its best-selling games have been first and second party(LOZ:TP, Wario Ware: Smoot Moves, Wii Play). As a matter of fact, very few third-party titles have sold more than a million copies on a Nintendo system in the last ten years. This includes its handhelds. If this was the case with the Game Boy Advance(which had no competition) and is the case with the wildly popular and dominant DS Lite, then what makes you think that things will be any different with the Wii when there are two other platforms that would much better accomodate the "big guns" of third-party developers?
1) It also has inexpensive development costs and a rapidly growing userbase
I just went over this. The Wii will garner more third-party support than the Gamecube, but this will most likely be in the form of games that are specifically tailored to take advantage of the Wiimote. Like I said, you probably won't see any truly epic titles on the Wii, because that's really not what it's about. When Capcom decided to make DMC4 multi-platform, it went on the 360 and not the Wii. Square moved DQ9 to the DS and not the Wii, Ubisoft ported Rainbow Six: Vegas and Ghost Recon: AW2 to the PS3 with no Wii release, and I think it's safe to say that Metal Gear would not see a release on the Wii should Konami decide to make it multi-platform.
2) I was shown (as an example of the greatness of HD) a screenshot from a PS3 fan that was at under 480p and he claimed it was HD. Even the biggest PS3 boosters don't really know or care about HD ...
That's because most people don't have HDTV's.....yet. HDTV is expected to outsell SDTV this year and should completely overtake it by 2009/2010.
3) What is the percentage of gamers who have ever taken a console online? What percentage of games released for any platform have Online gameplay?
Do I even need to explain this? Ever since Xbox live, online gaming has become more and more important and will continue to do so now that Sony has a unified online service with Home on the way. One of the reasons that multi-platform titles sold so poorly on the Gamecube as compared to the PS2 and Xbox was because Nintendo totally neglected online play. The same thing is happening this generation. Notice how titles like Madden, Call Of Duty, and Need For Speed have sold a lot more on other platforms despite the fact that the Wii has moved more units than the other two, and I can't imagine why[/sarcasm].

I agree with everything hastings said. Granted it can seem as if he is buyist but the fact is that people are writing off sony a little to quickly. The bandwagon is fun to ride just like it was in the last generation. Except the PS2 didn't fail... for reasons that could not have been forseen at it's launch. There is alot going for the PS3 in this generation and I think that it isn't gonna be and easy ride but the 360 and the PS3 are going to be duking it out for top spot. The wii..... not so much but I do not think nintendo cares about the tp spot... they are going to bank off of the wii and the DS for a long time.

By September 2001 (when the Gamecube launched in Japan) the PS2 had already sold 19.57 Million systems worldwide ( http://www.vgcharts.org/worldcons.php?date=37135&sort=0 ) so who exactly wrote if off? Edit: Also, by the time the Christmas rush was over the PS2 had sold 28.68 Million compared to 3.8 Million for the Gamecube and 3.08 Million for the XBox ( http://www.vgcharts.org/worldcons.php?date=37316&sort=0 )... This was certainly a close race ... Lots of people must have doubted the PS2's abilities then

Lets recapitulate a bit ,it seems some people dont understand some things . PS3 has actually sold way better than X360 last year .The same in NA ,way better in Japan (x4 ) and way better in Europe with only 3 days out .Its not going into sunset but it is building a viable user base ,what is what you dont understand ? X360 had 4.5 million sold end of september last year ,Sony has nearly 3 million right now . Some people are trading their X360 for PS3 . Sony PS3 even if it isnt number one will sell enough to receive versions or ports of all the occidental games .And in Japan it will receive software from most developing houses ,unlike the X360 ,so finally it will have more software and more good titles . Sony manufactures the PS3 unlike Microsoft the X360 ,they have already removed the EE chip ,improved dramatically the success with the manufacturing issues (so lowering costs ) and already started the 65nm Cell manufacture unlike Microsoft .Sony can reduce costs way faster than Microsoft or Nintendo . I know guys ,you want Sony to fail .You want them to abandon the videogame market .To go bankrupt if possible .But thats not happening ,stop dreaming .

Just quickly... what a complete toss. I saw this "cut-down" summary on GameTab: "Talk about stirring the pot. Insomniac's chief creative officer Brian Hastings has come up with 10 reasons why the PlayStation 3, in his opinion, will win this generation's console war. His ten reasons, in order, were: Home & LittleBigPlanet; Free Online; 50 GB Games; Casino Royale; HDMI; Standard HDD; The Wii Fad Will Fade; PS3 Has a Major CPU Advantage; PS2 still outselling 360; and Something For Everyone." Casino Royale? HDMI? PS2 outselling 360? Free Online? Sony (and their studios) must be back on their drugs again. Good luck with their delusions - instead of admitting they (or anything) is wrong and correcting - they just assume they are taking the "right" road and will win (the same way the PSP is winning).

I think very few people want Sony to go bankrupt, we just want them to learn their lesson ... 5 Million people will not buy a PS3 without any games for it We will not get a second job in order to buy a PS3 Most of us don't care about Blu-Ray Most of us don't own a TV capable of 1080p We dislike Sony calling something a gimick only to turn around and copy it And finally, we will not spend $600 on a console when there are good consoles on the market for $100 to $400
