Forums - Sales Discussion - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales on PC Disappointing sold only 170K

I don't know why it's disappointing, especially because it is RETAIL numbers in a smaller market.

and overall sales are obviously much higher with 100k players at the same time., unless 90% of MW2 players don't have a life.

- MW2 was way more hyped than COD4.
- MW2 had all the benefits of Steam-integration, which nullified any advantage to buy on Steam.
- MW2 had less competitors than COD4. COD4 came out in a time when there was Orange Box, Team Fortress 2, Bioshock, Crysis and Unreal Tournament. MW2 only had to deal with Left 4 Dead 2 and Borderlands (both nowhere near as a huge competitor as Orange Box/TF2 was to COD4).

Yet, despite all the advantages it had, MW2 SOLD LESS THAN COD4! In both US and UK (confirmed), and is not even being sold in any DD service except Steam.

I'm not grabbing this pile of junk.
I'm still playing MODS for the sweet COD 4.
The next COD4 MOD I am looking forward to is:

STAR WARS: GALATIC WARARE

Gotta LOVE the MODDING scene :)

Also been playing the PS3 beta for Battlefield Bad Company 2.
Must admit that this is FINALLY a real battlefield game.
I'll be getting the PC version because of the enhancements and controls but would highly urge any old school battlefield fan to keep an eye on that game regardless of the platform.
DICE is finally returning to form and is actually developing the game to use the strengths of each platform. Also AvP looks like it is bringing all the great game modes and gameplay from the original PC games to the new edition and supporting DX11 and PC MOD community well.

So what were we talking about again.... Oh right some game that no PC gamer should care about. Could care less about IW, there are plenty of much better devs. I would be fine with them sticking to the consoles.

Well if it sold 15k retail copies in Poland on first day alone then 200-300k for whole Europe are minimum.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales on PC disappointing

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is an absolute smash hit on the consoles. Currently, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 version sales are in the millions in the US alone. However, it seems like the PC platform did not perform as well as its console brethrens.

According to Kotaku, Gamasutra managed to squeeze out the PC sales figures for COD: MW2 from NPD and it looks bleak. The game managed to sell approximately 170k on the PC at retail. This figure does not account for Steam purchase. Considering the active players via Steam, one can estimate that about 100k purchases have been made online at the minimum.

Regardless, the once mighty PC sales for the popular Call of Duty franchise have dramatically dwindled. I wonder how much impact the boycott had on the sales of PC version. It will be interesting to see if PC sales will eventually pick up later on.

I think this may be downright false. I mean, they had announced after the first week that something like just under 6% of their total sales had been on PC, and that was just under 6% of like 10 million copies. Which means PC sold at least 550k in the first week alone, let alone first 3 weeks. so either Steam sales were amazing right out of the gate, or I call shenanigans.

That would be right for worldwide, but this is only for NPD data (NA).

But why would you say MW2 is a flop because it didn't sell well in NA(and that's without counting digital copies). That's like saying almost every western FPS is a flop because it doesn't sell in Japan.

I don't see piracy being a huge deal here. The main draw of the game for many ppl is the online, for which you are supposed to obtain a legal copy for. So to some extent, ppl who only cared for the single player experience probably wouldn't have even bought it on a console anyway. Of course I'm just speculating here.

I think MW2 as sold really well on the PC to date and will have very long legs indeed.  I just believe steam sales are massive compared to retail sales.

I been a PC gamer for over 10 years now and I know a thing or two and If the game was released with dedicated servers we would be seeing alot of cracked servers up and hundreds of thousands of cracked MW2 versions out there all playing multiplayer (like COD4).  And the game wouldn't of sold as many copies as it has or/is going too.   Don't be fooled into thinking other companys won't be looking into this and thinking about having their own IWnet setup for online gaming.
