Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 2 questions about Wii: Pointer offset + latency

Ok, thanks! Will check the TV for said processing settings. The offset thing is not that bad, but I don't understand why there's no calibration tool on the Wii other than choosing between "on top of TV" and "below TV". You're right, it's easy to adjust to the offset cause you see the cursor, but it feels a little unnatural so far.

Before I'm gonna buy a Wii on November 16. with Mario Galaxy, there's 2 things I'd like to know about the Wii.

First I just want to wish you good luck.  I hope you find it easier to track one down than I did last Christmas.

About the pointer it will be slightly off.  It doesn't aim the way a light gun aims, but you'll fall in love with the "accurate" controls anyways.  If it really bothers you, you can ditch the sensor and put two light/infrared sources on the sides of your tv and that should help.  I noticed it at first also, but after using it I can honestly say I don't think it matters.

About the latency/lag, I haven't noticed any of that.

I'm in Europe, so far it hasn't been a problem finding a Wii (although it might be once SMG is released).

Yeah, probably I'll get used to it. But I find it unnecessary, since it could be fixed with a software feature.

I have had this discussion a couple times with different people and I am very confident in saying your friend has his bar set up improperly.

If you take the time to go through the sensor bar settings in the Wii menu and carefully set it up once you shouldn't have any other issues depending on where you sit in reference to the TV. There should be a good range of positions you can sit and still get good responsiveness if you do it right but there is a sweet spot if you want dead on down the barrel accuracy.

There are only two settings you need to concern yourself with, and they are position and sensitivity. I pretty much keep sensitivity maxed out and position just wants to know if the bar is above or below the TV. Once those settings are done the remaining issue is making sure that your sensor bar is actually centered on your TV. So long as you don't plan on moving it my advice is to measure it out and use the sticky pads that come with it to make sure it stays put. Once you have it set up properly you should have at least a 90 degree arc in front of your TV where you will get good responsiveness and probably larger than that so long as people aren't too close to the TV.

... just wanted to post an update, now that I've had a Wii for 3 weeks:

Pointer offset / latency is not an issue at all, fortunately :) Must have been my friend's setup.
I'm really happy with the Wii, overall. Took my time with Mario Galaxy, but now I've got all 120 stars. My family loves Big Brain Academy, they play it every day.

3 things I noticed:
- I bought a component cable and was surprised to find that, on a HDTV screen, it's a mixed bag... Colors are better, everything is sharper, but the downside is that alias and jaggies are much more visible. Maybe I'll switch back to composite.
- The one thing I'm really unhappy with is Virtual Console. I downloaded Zelda II, for it's the only Zelda I never finished. But the emulation feels sooo slow and unresponsive. Haven't tried the GameCube pad yet, maybe it's because of the wireless connection. But if Nintendo don't fix that, it's a huge disappointment for me.
- Every now and then, the disk drive makes funny noises when I put a game in. Then it unsuccessfully tries to mount the disk for a minute, and then I get an error screen. It happened with every game, almost once a day... so I guess I'll have to replace my Wii. Will I be able to re-download the channels I already bought?

Call nintendo.. they'll send you a mailing label pretty much right away and get it back to you, I got mine all done(including receiving the label) in under 2 weeks. I'm not sure about now because of season but anytime you get an error, something is wrong contact them. Nintendo CS literally will get your call and have you on your way within 20 minutes(I don't think I've ever held on their CS line for more then that.) As far as the lag... I don't have ANY... do you have any other Blue tooth items in your home that are running? If so the signal from that could interfere and make it lag, check it out. If you have anything you can try changing the channels on it. Same with even radio frequencies, try to sync up everything in your house that's wireless even if it's a different frequency type so that they're all as far away in signal as possible ^^b And yeah in a lot of the Gamecube games basically ported over or redone for Wii partly through production, you'll see a lot of jaggies but in a lot of games it's just fine. What kind of TV do you have it might be the TV's scaling that makes the jaggies outrageous, I have a problem with then in Zelda TP(pretty much a GCN game. so I'll forgive it) and very mildly in Metroid Prime 3 but my TV does a decent job of stretching the image evenly. In the end the component will do you much better then composite trust me. As a side note, does anybody else get Scaling noise on their TV? I get it only with the Wii and it actually causes a slight line across the lower portion, no colors, it's more like an orbing effect that bounces around for a second and vanishes. I used to get in on my PS3 untill I switched to HDMI. Anybody got any ideas how to fix it?

@Erhodeo: Since you live in Europe (i assume that you live in EU), the law requires, that you get the VC games you have purchased to your replaced Wii (if they can't fix it and they replace it). But, be sure to copy your gamesaves to SD before sending your Wii to repair.

I believe they set it up that the "new" console given to you in the event they cannot fix the old one has everything transferred including memory of what VC games and how many points you have. You can just go and redownload them, if you have your VC linked to a MyNintendo account even in the event they messed this up(they did with me) you call Nintendo they'll have a Tech call you back within 2-3 days and it'll be done in a mere moment. I called the tech back directly via the extension she left when I was unable to get the phone during her call and called back, literally the moment I verified I had my wii on to her and the product code and it was up by the time I got the Wiishop channel to connect(about 10 seconds) so fast... and easy lol

@Souixan: Well, if they mess up the data replacement, it's good to have saves copied at your home. It may not be impossible to regain them afterwards, but it definately is hard.
With Virtual Console it's that easy as you described, but your SMG:s 120 stars may be a little harder to get afterwards. Or the platinum medals in Wii Sports or BBA.
