Well mine just started failing yesterday... so I SURE HELL HOPE NOT!
just when I happened to get a home theater to complete the set...

Looks like a BD drive problem, plays DVD's and all. BDs games play for like 5 min then they die... IF they start at all...

Mine's an 80GB 'Motorstorm' by the way

thats exactly what happened to mine, had to get it fixed,it stopped playing dvd's aswell eventually,

mine was 60gb,i bet all they did was clean the lenses or something for  £100...lol

Sadly cleaning the lens didn't work for mine did it myself though...

I already ordered a replacement laser lens, hope that does the trick

^^looks like you know more than me then, i only did business studied in school so yeah i don't know everything, but i do know some things. Yeah I can understand your point of view when you put it that way.

Edit: by the way don't be shy to disagree with this htread people, its all good.

I never seen someone so enthusiastic for discussion rather than being "right." It's refreshing to see.

Sony already said many times...PS3 will have a ten year life cycle. TEN YEARS!!! :)

Btw, the OP's logic of Sony making PS3 fail so customers need to buy a new one does not make any sense at all.

The major counter-argument is that Sony loses money on each PS3 sold, and they make money from software sales. Selling another PS3 to the same customer does not increase software sales, and therefore it does not benefit Sony to be doing that.

With almost 30 million PS3 consoles sold Worldwide, the chances of 4 PS3's breaking down near the same time (if a few weeks) is more than likely... They didn't make a profit before and they still don't, so it would be better for consumbers to have a reliable system to not lose more money. $300 towards a new system or $300 towards software? Of course you'll notice most systems break after warranty as well and going to a forum to post such things are common.

This pretty much sums it up.

If they have a pre-determined life cycle, why are some launch models still going, while people who bought their PS3s 18 months ago have gotten YLOD?

Bad treatment of your PS3 will cause it to fail. More so than some other consoles.

DO NOT leave it on when not using it.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT leave it in an enclosed space!

Vaccum the back every so often.

Yeah i treated mine very well, I did all of the above things, I always was nice to it, but still. Like I said in my case it was not down to the user.

@TC, many electronics fall into the 2-4 year lifecyle. Not exactly surprising with the ps3. However, those who got used to the gaming systems from ninty in the past would be disappointed.

Yeah I am not here to bash, or spread FUD, I hust wanted see what you all thought as well. I may well just be paranoid after what happened to my PS3, and as a lot of people have said, I may well be wrong.

I've had my PS3 for obout 2 years now and I haven't had a single problem yet.

As far as the predetermined life cycle theory goes...I really doubt it.

ps3 is not the future confirmed?
