It's a great deal for those who don't need backwards compatibility. dgm6780, for me there are multiple deal breakers. As in games that I am constantly replaying on the PS2. They are Okami, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud 2, Ratchet & Clank (all 3 of the PS2 games), and Odin Sphere.

Now, most of these are being resolved/will be resolved. Okami is coming on the Wii. I'll most likely stop playing DQVIII (my favorite RPG of last gen) when DQIX hits. Dark Cloud unfortunately has seen no hints at a sequel recently. R&CF:ToD is of course a new R&C game, but I don't like it as much as the PS2 games. It's a viable replacement, but why downgrade? Odin Sphere can be replaced by Oboro Murasama on Wii whenever that makes it to America.

Still, even with most of my PS2 games replaceable soon, the PS3 is missing software that appeals to me. My favorite games are (as you can surely see from that list) Action-Adventure, Platformers, and RPGs. The PS3 is lacking in all 3 of these right now, and it's filled with my two least favorite genres (sports and racing) and with one that I don't care for in particular (shooting). So, I agree this is a great deal for those who don't need PS2 BC and like the current PS3 software, but for me the PS3 is still a distant purchase.

If you have a PS3, you will enjoy PS3 games.
Assume you got the 40 gig, and you wanted to play a PS2 game- then use your PS2 (which has memory card readers)
The no BC argument is completely a moot point. And anyone who uses this fact to justify a non-purchase is really reaching for reasons not to get a PS3- which is sad.
Enjoy the world of games- get all 3 consoles.
This deal is fantastic, and soon enough, even the sworn enemies of the Sony empire will run out of reasons not to get a PS3.

ultraslick the PS2 is a very unreliable machine. I have gone through 3 of them in 6 years. Part of the main appeal of the PS3 is that it's a reliable PS2. Or at least that was part of the appeal of it. I also live in a studio apartment with very little space. We don't all have the luxury of having lots of storage space.

I don't understand how you can call people who own PS2s "sworn enemies of the Sony empire." You should learn to accept that some people don't share your tastes in games, and not every PS2 owner is finding the PS3 appealing. It's not an issue of whether or not this deal is good. It's absolutely good, but that doesn't mean it's good for everyone and that doesn't mean it appeals to everyone. Respect that.

I doubt there are many sworn enemies of sony that have a PS2.            If a PS2 owner does not find the PS3 appealing, why would he get one? To only play PS2 games? That is hard to understand

I think you were offended that I called it a moot point, and that is because of the fact that there is an 80 gig model out there with the all important Backwards compatability.

We are arguing different points but yours is shrouded with subtilty. It is a shame that there is not a $400 model with BC, I agree with you there. Reguardless if the decision to take it out was a bad one- it still gets a model out there for $200 less than the previous price, and if you want the 80 gig, then that is now $100 less as well.

Point is- if this BC is really that big of a deal to you, and makes you reconsider buying one- then you obviously have made a simple decision- you dont want a PS3 at its new low price- whether that is the 40 or 80 gig.

For that I applaud you, and even respect you- because I couldnt pass it up.

And if you draw comparisons of PS3 vs XBox elite, the PS3 is now $100 CHEAPER.(if you want online)

does the new 40GB not have any BC at all? no plans to releasea list of games that it can play via firmware updates?

and that marval alliance game doesnt equal a HD version of Spiderman 3. That Marvel game was the same as the X-Men legends game I played on my PSP. But it is nice to get 2 games, and forza is a highly respected game. But still PS3 is packing in a game that come out last week and is a top seller right now.

I'm always baffled when people claim that HDMI cables run $40. I can get one in a local store for $14. Is that really so rare?

 I think that the PS2 is a very reliable machine.  I still have and use my launch PS2 and have had it about 7 years now. :)

I don't think I know anyone who hasn't had to replace their PS2 at least once. And I don't think out of all of my friends any of them lack a PS2. Kind of scary when you think about it.
