Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Matt Casamassina: Nintendo is Lazy!

he may be something of a moron, but he has a point... NSMB could have been much more detailed... it's not like it would hurt them to create a real online service as well

It wouldn't have helped, not even in terms of getting better reviews. They would have still bashed it.

Nintendo didn't work with fighters but Brawl was a great success(were it as clean as VF i might just say the best in the genre).  They don't work with FP games but people speak highly of metroid prime series.  They find success even with things they aren't the most familiar.  I believe I can fault companies for not trying new things they haven't done before when they have a nice and successful history of it.  Although i suppose it's just me thinking the new stuff isn't terribly interesting.  NVM.

I can definitely respect you wanting them to expand into new genres. It falls apart when you expect them to expand into specific new genres. It is impossible to fault them for not making the specific game you want.

While Metroid does make a great FPS, is that the style of epic FPS you were talking about? I am going to guess no. I can definitely respect not liking their games, or even just their latest efforts. You can't please all the people all the time. But to pin all the short comings in the game library on any one company is over the top in my eyes. The areas Nintendo could be expected to help in is on them. Pikmin could help the RTS genre grow, and it has been entirely absent.

Nintendo are lazy. Guess what, the characters in Majora's mask are the same ones used in OoT and in Super Mario Brothers the bush is just a cloud coloured in green. Does cutting corners prevent a game from being good? Well I've just used two of Nintendo's most best games as an example, so I'm going to say no.

The proof that Nintendo isn't lazy is Metroid: Other M. Nintendo knows this serie isn't very popular, but they manage to create a game that really looks awesome. This game will be the first hyper-realistic game in cinematics. They do know what people want, and this is why they are so special. They create games for you. They are not cutting the corners, really.

The proof that Nintendo isn't lazy is a game that they are hiring a third party (Team Ninja) to make?

They didn't. Other M is being developed by "Project M" (or something similar), consisting of developers from Team Ninja and Nintendo.

I'm a Nintendo fan but even I have to admit that for the past year and a half or so they have been very lazy. There is no consistent flow what so ever of killer software that makes me want to go out to the store and buy it first day. This year I have got Pikmin which was a remake, Conduit which was disappointing to say the least, and NSMB which is great but having only one exceptional game the entire year is ridiculous. Nintendo needs to make 2010 considerably better than 2009. Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M, Zelda, and Pikmin 3 would make 2010 incredible if Nintendo releases all them and doesn't make us wait like usual.

That reminds me of complaints of CTYD using the same gun models as RE4. Of all the complaints, that is probably the dumbest. But I bet loads of HD games reuse assets. They just spend loads of money to cover it up.

I could care less about those genres personally (except third person action).  I just think that they might be far more successful than they think as well as changing the nature of those games(maybe even making them something i can enjoy).  We wouldn't even be on here having this discussion if they had a few more titles in said genres being publicized. That's mostly my point. Considering if the normal cycle is true we will see another Nintendo console in 2011 they don't even have time to start them and get them out by the time it will matter.

I would agree with all of this except the release date of the next console. Nintendo has always been the last to release historically. I have my reservations that they will release early now that they are on top. That is a different discussion though.

I'm not sure when they will try to destroy the Wii. I think it would be best for them sooner rather than later. One of PS3's biggest rivals was the PS2. How do you knock down the disruptive king? Either way i'm sure DS2 will give us many clues.

"How do you knock down the disruptive king?"

Only by dropping the incumbent ways and trying to disrupt yourself.
