Forums - General Discussion - Should obese people be required to buy two seats when flying?

No, they shouldn't be allowed on planes to begin with.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I've lucked out lately but being a 6'4" guy around 200 lbs, getting stuck next to a fatty is a truly miserable experience for me. I have a hard enough time jamming myself into some of those airline seats as it is. Getting stuck next to someone who can't lay off the fucking doughnuts and lasagna only makes it worse.

I may sound mean but it's how I feel. Some people are overweight for legitimate reasons; unfortunately, that's only a small portion of the fat bastards on this planet. The rest are that way because of their own doing. After spending a decade and a half in southern California and recently moving back to the Midwest, my tolerance for fat people is at an all-time low. Yesterday, I came out of a grocery store and saw a 5' tall 12 year old girl who probably weighed as much, if not more, than me. Ridiculous.

+1

I still don't understand how many people let themselves get like that in the first place! I mean once you notice that you are gaining a lot of wieght why on earth would you just continue to put on more? Ugh, annoys me.

I believe it's kinda like a bell curve... the more you get fat... the more your metabolism slows, making it easier and easier to get fat and harder and harder to get skinny until you get to a certain point of very fat.

So it takes a REALLY serious effort to get out of being fat.

Also being smrt ad stopping to eat when people ae no longer hungry, not when they are full, let's anyone eat whatever they want without getting fat. Seriously, try it.

There is no excuse if someone wants to stuff themseves full every tiem they eat, they bring it on themselves. Everything has consequences, I don't see why being fat shouldn't carry any.

I am 5'6 130.

I am just talking from a biological perspective.  It's easier to eat healthy right away then it is to lose weight you've gained.

I was 6 5 and 225, then I stopped working out compeltely and fell to 175, then back to 225 from pure fat, now I'm down to a stable 195-200. I didn't exercise or do anything and ate anything I wanted to lose 25 pounds. I just stopped eating when I was no longer hungry, not when I was "full." It works damn wonders.

Did you go from 175 back to 225 because of your eating habbits while at the gym? when I was at the gym I ate lots of protien etc and when I stopped at the gym, I cairried on eating the same way, and my weight soon piled on lol, but its back to normal-ish now.

More or less, though to be honest I was not eating very healthy even when working out, I just burned a hell of a lot more than I took in.

Now I only eat when hungry and once I stop being hungry I stop, I don't wait until I get the "full" feeling.

See, I can't do that.  Luckily I just started watching what I ate, counted my calories, and lost like 30 pounds.

I just set a calorie budget, stopped drinking non-diet sodas, stopping eating fast food except every once and a while, and I was fine to eat until I was full.

An old boss of mine did something like this. As I recall, the rules were pretty simple:

  1. As soon as you feel hungry, eat something. Don't wait until you're REALLY hungry.
  2. As soon as you no longer feel hungry, stop eating. Do not keep going until you are 'full'.
  3. Avoid fried foods when you can. It's not the end of the world to eat them once in a while, but avoid them when practical.
  4. Avoid getting more than 1/3 of your calories from fat. Again, it's not the end of the world to do so once in a while, but avoid it when practical.

He called this 'grazing', because Rules 1 and 2 pretty much precluded the possibility of meals as we tend to think of them: it was more like a long series of snacks throughout the day. This makes it impractical for some school, job, or family scenarios. But he was in a situation where he could do it, and he dropped weight like a stone. Like an effing STONE, I tell you. Several of my co-workers tried it when they saw what it did for him, and it worked well for them too. Apparently this works by speeding up your metabolism.

Canned cherries were his favorite snack. Something about lots of energy in a small package.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Point #1 is a terrible idea.

The best thing you can do is just stick to a schedule.  Whatever that schedule whether it's the 6 meals a day thing or 3 meals and a snack just stick to it.  If you just eat whenever you're hungry you're going to mess with your metabolism and that's just never a good idea.

It confuses your body so that it doesn't know when your next meal will be so it just starts storing food.  If your body knows when the next meal is, it knows how quickly to process food and energy.

If you're feeling hungry and it's not meal time yet just wait 15 minutes.  If you can't wait 15 minutes either drink a glass of water or chew a stick of gum.  Don't just eat because you're feeling hungry.

Oh, and I doubt he dropped weight like a stone because he followed all those rules, he lost so much weight because of point #3.  If a guy just stops drinking soda or going to fast food places he'll lose at least 10 pounds from that alone.

If people really want to lose weight, it's pretty simple:

  1. Don't skip breakfast or any other meal.  Just make sure you don't skip breakfast.
  2. Eat meals at regular times.
  3. Set a calorie budget for the day and stick to it.
  4. Stop drinking sodas (though having a diet soda a day is fine)

When I did that, the weight flew off and it was simple.  The calorie counting takes care of all that keep eating until you're not hungry nonsense *and* somewhat manages what you eat.  If you're trying to lose weight your budget doesn't allow for a lot of extra stuff.

When I did this my breakfast was generally a cup of cofee and a cereal bar which was 93 calories, lunch was usually a lean cuisine which ranged from 250-400 calories, and then dinner was generally about 1000 calories.  During the day I would have a 100-200 calories snack and I might have another in the evening if I had the calories left over.

I followed that and the weight just flew right off of me.
