Forums - General Discussion - Should obese people be required to buy two seats when flying?

I feel like this thread is a sarcastic way of making fun of fat people

Have you flown next to a really fat person? Its really uncomfortable for the rest of us and its kind of annoying that airlines haven't srtarted charging fat people for the extra seats they take up.

As far as I'm concerned they don't need to pay for two seats. But they don't need to board the plane either if they can't fit on the seat they paid for.

To sum up, they should pay for two seats if they want to be sure they'll be able to fly when the plane is full.

If they actually require two seats' worth of space, then yes, they should pay for both. I do not doubt claims that this is embarrassing, but this is no one's problem but their own, and something that is frankly within their control. A little pressure is a good thing.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

They can also buy a business class ticket which has more space. In some business class sections it can also be impossible to bother other passengers if the seats are individual rather than strung together.

I think the obese people might find this suggestion insulting.

Not more insulting than taking up space that doesn't belong to you.

I agree with this but in turn, do i have to pay more for leg room because im skinny but unfortunatly, genetially or otherwise i can't fit my legs on my side and have to stretch out?

Its a stricky circumstance :/

Depends on how much you have to stretch them... I also have long legs and it pisses me off to go in the last row (which is usually a bit smaller, probably the leftover space after putting dozens of rows in front). But if I have to put them a bit to the side at most I'll take a very small bit of space which shouldn't disturb the other person at all. In moderation it shouldn't be a problem, unless you're next to a very picky person (in which case the flight attendants can probably find you another seat).

It's all a matter of common sense. I don't think many people are out to annoy others for petty reasons, but taking up a big portion of someone else's space is definitely too much.

Just as an FYI I recently sat between two big Rugby players (look it up you US folks! Or just imagine 2 very large American Football players with enormous shoulders). They weren't remotely fat in the usual sense, but they were bloody huge!

They were decent about it though, switching seats to give me an isle and they did try and keep themselves somewhat within the confines of their chairs.

On a similar note I flew back from Moscow a while back and realized the nice guy massively bulking out of the seat next to me was Dolph Lundgren (spelling?). He was very polite, but huge to sit next to!

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Also I can't fix the legnth of my legs by eating some salads.

Also when I need to stretch out I keep to myself and never get in anyone's way, unless the guy in front of me decides to recline. In which case I stretch forward and push him back upwards (it doesn't break the seat, don't worry). Another way to get the guy to move back up is to turn on your light and tilt it to it hits them square in the face. If they whine just tell them to pull their seats up, if they pull the "i have the right to" just pull  the same about your light.
