Forums - Sales Discussion - 600k PS3s sold in Europe

ioi said: Diomedes1976 said: Now if they would add the extra 100K to the frontpage .... This bothers me a bit ,with the PS3 vgcharts always consider the lowest number available as the safest bet but with the others they put the best predictions ,make numbers from nowhere ,and even when things doesnt bode well with their own data (X360 Japan data being 15K off right now ,X360 NA data being nearly 1 million off comparing with NPD,Wii Japan data being nearly 200K off ) or the provided by NPD or Media create they dont change ir or if they do they dont do it in the correct amount . Diomedes, the figures we had estimated based on the data we had came out at ~520k. Numbers are not "made up out of nowhere" they are estimated from the raw data we have - this will of course be subject to error from time to time. I think 520k compared to something approaching 600k (although who says that figure is spot on - also it comes with a range, could be anything from 550-650k really) isn't bad for our limited sources. As for the other numbers, you have said a few times that blah is too high and blah is too low - based on what exactly? All numbers on the frontpage are consistent with our own Japanese / NA data as you would hope and all is calculated in the same manner. Edit: according to this site, SCEE have reported 550k sold through: (more than PS2 in 3 months and PS in one year) http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?p=1426233[/quote] I would like to believe that ,but there are some things I dont see very clear . For example for the PS3 february data you added exactly the numbers of NPD for US and Canada to make your NA number .Perfect .Problem comes that adding those two numbers with the Wii and the X360 still leaves some 20K consoles or more you have added as I did put "out of nowhere " .Now if you say your data for the PS3 is exactly the same as NPD but your estimations for the X360 and Wii are higher that would explain that perfectly ,but it is somewhat suspicious that your PS3 data is exactly the same yet the X360 and Wii data is dozens of thousands higher .Its maybe a minor gripe ,but makes one think about it ,specially when your data for the X360 in NA is starting to show major discrepancies with the NPD one adding Canada and US (I call nearly a million major discrepancies ) and the Wii data in Japan some 10% higher that the arguably very reliable Media Create one .

In Greece the PS3 sucks right now... it is higher than a regular monthly salary so i don't expect it to be good. In my town the biggest retailer (MediaMarkt) got about 50 PS3's and until today they have sold... 2. But it's normal Greece isn't a rich country...

lol to high to much... Sony does well it must be fake lol... 600k choke on it!

The only thing I'm choking on is all of your lol's! Oh snap! Right now the numbers seem fairly in line with the evidence. If that turns out to be too low or high, we'll find out soon.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

More than a million consoles were shipped across Europe on launch day last week with 600,000 sold
I was optimistic with regard to the PS3 launch for Europe, but this beats my expectations. Considering the price is higher than the XBox 360, the XBox 360 only managed to sell 390K in Europe for 2005, including Christmas, IMO for 2006 XBox 360 sales in Europe, except for the UK, weren't impressive at all. North America is the XBox 360's strongest market, but still the PS3 managed to slightly outperform the XBox 360 in the same timeframe according to NPD. Considering the 60GB, with Wi-Fi/Flashcard reader sold much easier than the cheaper 20 GB model, I think many consumers aren't solely looking at the price, but rather at the bang for their buck.

You can't directly compare sales of a system which was sold out for months against a system that is readily available in order to indicate relative popularity of the systems ...

@ HappySqurriel Yes, but the XBox 360 is now widely available but apart from good UK sales and amazing North American sales IMO the console isn't doing that impressive worldwide, probably slightly better than the original XBox. The PS2 is still going strong and is aimed at the low-end market, the PS3 seems to be aimed at being the ultimate extreme (do-it--all) gaming system, the high-end market past consoles like the 3D0 failed to flourish with. I think when the PS2 will be retired, the PS3 will have become much cheaper to produce and will likely take the PS2's place (maybe with a slimline model).

Why as the 600,000 number not once been credited to a stats company? Why as it never been split out how many came from what country? I think it's really weird that the BBC would came up with a number and not give it a source. Could it be that Sony was the source? and that's why they would want to stay quiet?
