Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Mario Galaxy bombs in Japan - only sells 130,000 on day 1

fazz said:
Hmmm... aren't games supposed to be released on saturdays or sundays? So people won't skip work or school to get the games...

Also, bomb is the wrong word. Maybe disappointing or underperforming, but as its thursday and the japanese are @ school/work... I see the sales skyrocketing on the weekend.

Actually, this is only true of Dragon Quest as far as I can tell.  When a new Dragon Quest game is released in Japan is must be released on Sundays or Holidays so that people do not take the day off and go stand in line for the newest Dragon Quest game.

As much as I like VGChartz, I must be honest. I'm not too interested in the community. Most (I'd say a good 70% of the people here) are too caught up in the fanboyism and politics of gaming, and are mostly just people waiting to ravenously insult another user on the forums. I tried participating in the forums but rather than discuss it seems most of you would rather tear other people down. Why is it necessary to insult everyone who thinks differently than you? Also, not everything here is a fanboy conspiracy. I see the word fanboy here than I do on most forums out there. I'm sorry, I don't want to be a part of a community that's so negative towards everyone all the time. I'd rather go to a place where the people of a forum are more willing to discuss and step away from personal attacks any time someone disagrees with them. I just can't take it anymore.

So I ask, respectfully, that you don't add me. I'll more than likely respond to respectful messages but don't count on me being on the forums too much and don't count on me accepting your friend request.

I think the only problem here is the topic in which people were predicting outrageous numbers like 900k first day sales and the like, which is absurd. The overhyping by certain VGchartz members makes 130k first day sales seem paltry when if fact they are great. They aren't Halo 3 in the US great, but Mario hasn't been plastered on mountain dew cans, and constant TV adds for the past 3 months either.

Their is nothing remotely disappointing about it, certain members here just had absurd expectations. If not meeting the expectations of a few members here constitutes a flop, then yes it flopped. But 130k first day sales is excellent, and in week 1 will probably be higher than sunshine or 64, and will continue to sell for the lifetime of the wii.

This topic title really is flame bait, and shameful at that.

I agree that #s are exagerated, but heck, we've done this before. Members here will get hyped and make crazy predictions.

But your statement begs the question: What was 64 and Sunshine's first day sales?

130k bomb? WTH? Well when a ps3 game sells 130k it doesnt bomb to sony fans, now 130k for a wii game is bombing?

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

130k is lower than I expected but this thread title and the thread creator was simply here as flamebait. It's pretty obvious, how on Earth can 130k be a "bomb" for FIRST DAY sales? It's the the first day, it doesn't determine whethero r not a game has bombed because it's not LTD sales, it's FIRST DAY.

Nice trolling, I'm surprised the mods haven't locked this yet. There's already threads discussing this very same matter and with much less flamebait.

It didn't bomb at all, but I would call it a disappointment. But I'll wait until I see the first week sales before I say anything.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!

Games coming out on thursdays have not had affected other games that have came out on thursdays. Many games have came out on that day and had sales above 150k. WE HAVE BEEN DOING FIRST DAY SALES FOR SOME TIME NOW!! They've always happened on this day, what makes it any different from last week first day sales
  1. "have not had affecteed" WTF? I'm not expert, but I don't think you need had twice. You used have like 3 times in that sentence. I can't understand what you are saying
  2. Mario Galaxy sales: SERIOUS BUISNESS
  3. We record sales by week. We look at sales first day.
  4. What games, specificall, sold 150k. Was it in Japan? If it's in the US, then phail.
  5. "They've always happened on this day, what makes it any different from last week first day sales" Who "they". What do you mean by "always happened on this day" What about "last week first day sales" What game are we talking about, because I'm sure there has to be one more then Mario Galaxy. Also, that sentence is a comma splice
  6. I don't know what your talking about any more

I also wanna add that japanese kids have school on saturdays and they do community service after school. So is it really any wonder why DS/PSP games are sellling better then console games?  Japan's gaming demographic has changed. Most of them are on the go these days they haven't got much time to play consoles, so they get their fix playing handhelds on public transport etc...

Both Mario64 and Sunshine started at around 300k first week which I think Galaxy will reach and maybe pass.

130k on the first week is only considered a bomb based on...
A. expectations/hype
B. resources it took to develop/market the game
IF this number is true then SMG has underperformed on the first day of sales, end of story. However, saying it flopped or bombed based on the first day numbers is unreasonable. But trying to sugarcoat the disappointing first day sales of a title as high as caliber as Supermario is pretty foolish. If MGS4 sold as much as SMG on the first day in Japan, the world would be at an outrage.

So do we have updated bets for first week sales?

Other than saying 130k is "lower than expected" for first day sales, I don't think you can conclude much else.

I still think it will do 550k-600k week#1.

The irony I see, is that as we all sit here and argue over this - its Saturday morning in Japan, and thousands of people will be heading out to pick up the game. I wish I was one of them.

If Galaxy does 300k - even 400k - week#1 - I'll say that is a really disappointing week#1 sales. But for a Thursday release, where the focus seems to have been Ace Combat (and Mario still outsold it by 2:1 - given no lines in the morning) - 130k for 1 day isn't that bad. Its no where near "flop" status for sure.

...

What will everyone say who is currently calling it a "flop" - when (if) it does 500k+ week#1?
