Do PC games count? If so, my 2 candidates for sad (or more precisely, disturbing) endings are :
1. Harvester - in the end you either agree to kill your girl friend and thus join the cult as a serial killer, or don't agree, and you are both killed...
2. Dark Seed - though I am not totally sure I remember correctly, from what I remember in the end it turns out all your hard work was for nothing and you contain the alien seed yourself.

About Dark Seed...If I remember correctly there was a Darkseed II game so maybe the guy turned out Ok...Good games, reminded me a lot of Lovecraft

to lazy to go back to the post

but squall "could" have died at the end of disc 1. it is possible the entire rest of the game is just him "on the way to death"

Time for hype

Halo: Reach

^I blame lack of competition. A few years ago I probably would have said Sonic Adventure 2 :P

Rampage for NES. There was no save, I played for HOURS, and the ending was just "Congrats".

Saddest day of my life.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII's ending is the saddest for me, the silly part is, I even knew it was coming. Me and my step-brother completed it in one day, 14 hours straight, we were depressed for a few days after that.

Second would be Final Fantasy X, I always thought that Yuna was going to die at the end and accepted that, but then it suddenly turned around at the end, and Tidus died instead.

Metal Gear Solid 3 was also sad, although I haven't completed in a while, and now that I'm older and will understand the story better, the ending might be even more sad.

Lastly, (spoiler tags because it's a recent game), Final Fantasy XIII-2. The ending wasn't sad like the other games, but more shocking. The poor story took away the impact of the ending, but it was still very un-expected and sad to see Serah collapse on Noel and die, they were brilliant characters and they had grown so close, almost close enough for Serah to dump the big paedo for him.

You expected them to send a cookie?

Halo Wars had a decent ending, Reach ending was pretty sad too,*SPOILERZ* although I think they killed off the characters too easily, Kat gets showed in the back by needler, survive countless battles, and they all just happen to die within that short timeframe. The lone wolf was pretty sad too.

MW3 had a decent ending, for the franchise end as well. Decent conclusion, especially the escape from the rabbit hole.

Can't really think of much else at the top of my head that made me go "ohhh shit" other than the post I've posted in this thread, like a year ago.

What a necro.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Final Fantasy 8, particularly the Laguna and Raine scene. It starts at 2:25, I always lose it at this part after finishing the game =)

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Terranigma's ending was pretty great. That game had an amazing story, especially considering it's a SNES game.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories' ending shocked me as well, although there are multiple endings and I have only seen one.
