Forums - General Discussion - $198 too expensive? HD-DVD player on sale for $99 at Wal-mart

Update.... See if you can find one at Best Buy. They have them now... $99 on the website but in store only. You also get 2 free DVDs in store right then and there. 7 total.... There aren't any left in stock near me. :(

The HD-DVD players are selling out everywhere for Best Buys. This deal was jumped on by a lot of people before most were even aware of it. If they keep the price at $99 through the holidays, there are going to be *insane* sales. In fact, I will pick one up for my parents at $99.

Well, I don't share the same confidence of others that the blu-ray camp will drop prices. Apple, Sony, other blu-ray players are in companies that don't like to compete on price, and will even cede a market rather than compete on price. At least in my experience, they are generally on the 'high end' of the market.

The problem is...the consumer marketplace is voting for commodity prices (favoring old DVD over the new stuff for that reason).

If Toshiba is able to consistently undercut the cost of blu-ray players, I would even call this war for hd-dvd...despite the lead for blu-ray.

I do hope to see a $99 blu-ray player soon...but I'm doubtful. They'd probably consider a $299 a bargain...and I don't think that resonates with the marketplace.

Damn, checked in Indiana. None. Would love to pick one up for that price.

I wasnt going to get involved in all this HDDVD/BR garbage, but I guess I am on HDDVD's side for now.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

best buy have the same deal as of right now!!!! its Store only and cant buy online right now its oos

Nice to see that Toshiba is royaly f***ing the consumer over. Disney put it best when they said that HD-DVD was a half-step (half-assed) product. Blu-ray is the only future for HDM and it will prevail. Disney said the Blu-ray camp will not sit idle and let a consumer money soaking product win this war. I expect that the new sharp drives will be on sale on BF for $199. Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic should all have some great deals with greatly better marketing. Now is not the time to give into this half step format, everyone needs to do themselfs a favor and choose the right HD format, and that is Blu-ray.

HD-DVD is the steam powered car in this race, Blu-ray is an F16.

Please look at every piece of info on these products before buying. If you can not look at the future you do not need to be purchasing either format right now. It is not about a single individule it is about what is best for everyone. Blu-ray is unargualy the best, the future, Blu-ray is HD.

You know what? I am gonna get this from Wal-Mart then. I can handle getting 5 more free HD DVDs ... Best Buys are sold out, but I am going to call the stores myself and see ...

Toshiba screwing over consumers? Yeah, because lowering prices is such evil to the consumer, sheesh. If there was no competition, prices would stay high forever.
