Forums - General Discussion - RATM - Killing in the Name for UK christmas No.1

So last year we got Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah to No.2 in the single charts last christmas, just getting beaten to No.1 by some tripe from Simon Cowell.

This year to stop Cowell's latest karaoke group reaching christmas No.1, a facebook group has been set up.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2228594104&ref=nf

Join this group and invite your friends! Buy a copy of Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine between the 13th and 19th of December from iTunes or 7Digital.

The group currently has 220,000 members and 10,000 members have joined in the last hour. So this is a realistic attempt. Click on the link to find out more!

(Don't buy before the 13th!)

It's an impressive number in the group but the vast majority of those won't buy the song and it will almost definately end up as number 2 like the Buckley song last year (maybe even 3rd behind the original version of Don't Stop Believing if that's to be the X-Factor entry like rumoured). I don't know why it really matters though, I would think most people who like RATM don't care about chart positions usually and it's not as though the X-Factor song will be the first entry by someone who can't sing this year. Ultimately Sony will be the only ones to benefit from this as both artists are under their record label!

I support this cause.

Yeah but the Christmas No.1 will be played endlessly all over the radio, which my mum will be listening to full volume as she prepares christmas dinner. It would be so much better to listen to RATM .

Plus, you could just buy it because it's an awesome song.

Fair point, I do like the idea of the whole family relaxing after all the presents are open, everyone has eaten too much and my Dad is about to take his afternoon nap when Killing in the Name suddenly blasts out on the radio!

The thing is, most people who want Killing in the name of to be number 1 this Christmas will probably already own it and see no reason to buy a second copy as they bought the album or the single at some point over the past 17 years.

Whereas the X-Factor Karaoke tripe is something that no one owns yet, thus giving it a heavy advantage. Seriously, Journey - Don't stop believing, could they have picked any more of a karaoke song for these people?

Anyway, in the support of good music I think I will buy Killing in the name of, or maybe buy it as a present for someone.

Hey! I love that song!

To be fair the guy who is likely to win the X-Factor is actually a very good singer (better than most in the charts currently anyway), the rest of them are very much meh. Of course I would never compare any of them to musical greats, such as RATM, and I would personally never buy their music as it's not what I like listening too but some of them are better singers than they get credit for.

Oh no, don't get me wrong it is an awesome song, it's just that it is also a stereotypical karaoke song. You get drunk people singing it in pubs on karaoke nights, it's almost inevitable.

To be honest I can't sing at all, so I'm not the best judge, but whenever I've watched X-Factor it's always seemed like pub singers who have got a lucky break.

Yeah I know what you mean, point proven by the fact I sang that very song in a rather drunken state on Friday night!

You're right with most of the X-Factor contestants but some of them are actually quite good. Of course the ability to sing doesn't mean they'll have a successful career in pop music. Anyway, I've decided to buy the RATM song as criminally, I don't own it yet!

A great cause, they were incredible live at Reading 08.

Check out this remix by SebastiAn, just keep an open mind and try and like it rather than instantly slating it for changing the original...
