Forums - Gaming Discussion - VideoGame Generation: which was your favorite? Also, what console.....?

I really started gaming hard during the 16 bit era on the Genesis. Games like Sonic and Streets of Rage hold a very special place in my heart. But if I had to pick one generation, it's gotta be 32-bit. In many ways the first generation of true 3-D has probably aged the worst of any generation. However, a testament to the quality of that generation is the fact that I was still buying and playing PS1 games up till the launch of the PS3. Squaresoft had a lot to do with making that generation great with 3 FFs, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, FF Tactics, and my personal fave Chrono Cross. I still listen to the Chrono Cross soundtrack it's that damn good.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Fave gen: 16 bits, fave console: SNES!

The golden era, the best fight between the greatest companies ever in the industry (Nintendo and Sega), it was OUTSTANDING!

Games that made me choose the SNES: Thjousands, but particularly Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi's Island and the most special: Super Mario RPG!

Where did you took that N64 picture? rofl

OT: The DVD generation - My favorite console: PS2. The Gamecube had some very awesome games too.

I think it would be a good idea to mention when we started gaming as well.

I've played games since the NES. My favorite is the last generation. PS2/XBox/GC were host to some amazing games, in a wide variety of genres (which I think is key).

Just some of my personal favorites:
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Metal Gear Solid 2/3
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus
Metroid Prime
Resident Evil 4

I think this generation has an excellent chance of surpassing every generation before this though. PSN/XBLA/Wiiware have really opened up the doors for some more creative games like Flower, as well as retro throwbacks like Shadow Complex. We got 2D platforming back in NSMB Wii and LBP, along with indie games like Braid. Online gaming has really taken off in the console space. And I definitely think we have at least another 3 good years before this generation gives way to the next generation.

The one genre that seems to have stagnated is JRPGs, which seemed to have peaked in the SNES or PS1 generation depending on who you ask.

My favorite is the 7th gen. Mainly because i barely played my ps2 last gen. HD gaming is great. My favorite console is the Xbox 360, the control is so comfortable. My fav game is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the online really made me love, fps' and XBL. My favorite game series are now FF, Gears of War, Halo, Fable, and the Forza Motorsport series.

Since you won't let me vote for gen 2 for some reason, I'll settle for gen 4, SNES and Super Mario World.

Do these eras include PC games? If so, I vote for the 32-bit era. The N64 is probably my favorite console ever, mainly because it delivered so many amazing 4-player local multiplayer experiences, the one area the PC can't touch (without 4 computers to lug around, anyway). Not to mention, it had some of the greatest games ever (Ocarina of Time, hint hint). Tack that onto the PC's golden age (imo), and that's gaming at its best.

I say this even though I didn't have a PS1! To this day, many of my friends and I still occasionally play the N64 for its local multiplayer, even with the Wii out.

If PC games are out of the picture, I'd probably vote for this gen. I mean, PC gaming is much weaker nowadays, and while the Wii / HD consoles haven't caught up to the greatness of older systems, the DS and 2-3 more years of games to go easily makes up for it.

If handhelds don't count either, meh. Put my vote for 16-bit consoles. The best JRPG's, the best platformers, the birth of the fighting genre, 2D gaming at its best, etc etc...

Well, it's hard to say which PC games would count for which era. However, anything late 90's should count for 32-bit (N64 / PS1 time), which is really what matters. So, I say the 32-bit era!

To be honest, it's hard to discuss the enjoyment of each particular era while isolating lots of the games. I would have probably been disappointed with my N64 if I had nothing to complement it. Thankfully, with some of my favorite PC games like Heroes III or Starcraft out (heck, even FF7/8 were on PC), this wasn't the case!

7th generation hands down. The PS3 rules all.
