Forums - Sony Discussion - MGS4 delayed til Q2 08

I'm pretty sure Konami has a similar fiscal year to Sony and Nintendo. That is Q1 2008 was already April-June, and MGS4 has been moved back to July-September. If they've been speaking about fiscal quarters instead of calendar quarters, then they never would've been part of helping Sony reach their shipping goals anyway.

So why does the press release say that the previous release period was winter?

I am tired of trying to understand the motivations of Konami. They talk about bringing the game to other platforms. Reaffirm their commitment to PS3 exclusivity. Then they delay the game twice doing harm to the brand. I swear this company has to be bipolar. They are high on the platform one minute, and throwing fits about how awful it is the next.

These kind of things hurt Sony. They hurt consumer confidence. They hurt the products image. They hurt the games sales. They make people who might have bought the console for the game hang back. Thinking this game is going to be ported so why not buy the other machine, or wait till they find out for sure. The only rational explanation is that Konami does not care one way or the other. That they fully intend to port the game to the 360 for the holiday season, and they only have modest expectations of the PS3 version.

I will take a wild guess that the delay is mostly in response to staff reallocation. They are moving staff from the PS3 game to work on the 360 version so they can have it ready for next holiday season. I just do not believe they are scared by the lineup on the PS3 during the first quarter, and I do not believe they are waiting for the install base to increase. That will not happen if developers hang back or give mixed signals.

Anyone else think that Konami maybe just maybe is punking Sony.

I know, just wanted to ward off idiots, just in case...

MGS4 was a key part of the PS3's 08 domination, now the domination will have to wait a little longer. Hrmmmm.....

Delaystation 3.

Think about their negotiations with Microsoft and Sony behind the scenes. If they make a public statement like, "we're disappointed with the performance of the PS3" it may be intended to motivate Sony. If they make public statements like, "We're commited to the PS3" this puts pressure on Microsoft.

Of course, some people may speculate that there *aren't* negotiations going on with Microsoft. But that'd be nieve. There's a lot of money to be made here.  Look at the sales of PS3 exclusives so far: you would be hard pressed to characterize them as anything but disappointing.

All I can say is remember Lair. Could probably have been awesome if it'd had more development time, I don't think Kojima wants MGS4 to end up a pile of rushed crap with good graphics. And if there is ANYONE on this planet I would put in charge of development to make sure this game didn't suck, it would have to be Hideo Kojima.

But we don't know how severe the delay will be. It could be a week into the 2nd quarter, or until june or july. It would be nice if they explain why the game is being delayed.

I'll take the case!!!

This in a nutshell is where you win and lose console wars. There gets to be a perception(not reality) about lack of games, then people don't buy the system, then devlopers wait to realease games, then people wait longer. I think the PS3 has great potential and some great titles but so didthe Saturn. And no matter how angry many of you are Konami, I refuse to lay Sony's problems at their feet. They may be a savior for the PS3 but they are not doing anything mroe than exposing the problems already there.

While I do think this will arrive on the PS3 I don't think we will see it until about a year from now. The one thing we wont see is any more Metal Gear on the PS3. The next one will jump ship or they will wait until the next generation.

It's funny how excited everyone has been for next quarter. Don't they realize that when a company says delayed to Q1 '08 they mean TBA '08. Look at Nintendo. Metroid was supposed to be Q1 '07 after being delayed from launch ended up Q3-4 '07. Smash went from Q2 '07 to Q1 '08. And as much as I love Mario Kart I don't think we will see that until November next year.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

But why hype a game like MGS4 when it has 8 months to go before its released? You have Uncharted, Haze and UT3 coming soon, but almost all the hype is going to MSG4, GT5, and Killzone 2 ( won't make it in 08) and these games don't come til mid or late 08. This in my mind, makes no sense to me.

I'll take the case!!!

a simple google search reveals that fiscal year for Konami begins in April. So Q2 is July-Sept.

but seriously, big titles like MGS are always gonna get delayed--multiple times. not too surprising. SCE games doesn't seem like they get delayed as often, on the other hand. wonder why.

the Wii is an epidemic.

They're fiscal year does end in March. I should've read the source though, it seems they are talking about a calendar quarter.

EDIT: On the other hand the press release could be talking about the game's original target of the end of calendar year 2007.

Anyone who thinks that FFXIII, GT5 or any other late 2008 games will release in 2008 might want to rethink that about now.
