Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What if Nintendo made a blue ocean FPS?

An intended big hit just like Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. Nintendo style FPS.

Would it be casual friendly with clean visuals Ala-wii sports, or a serious effort running, let's say, in the same engine as zelda wii, which might be astonishing.

This would be one of the last efforts on Nintendo for the Wii, let's say Christmas 2012.

Would it work? Do you think they could destroy Halo3 from the King of most sold FPS?

Halo 3 isn't the king anyways. That would be Call of Duty 4.

If they did make one, chances are that it wouldn't do that well. They have their intended audience clear in mind with the games they make, and I just don't see them ever really making a shooter. I suppose Metroid sort of counts, but it's not a blue ocean title.

Metroid Prime Hunters Wii?

Anyway, I don't think we'd see a game like that.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I'm counting only one platform. So yes, Halo 3 is the King.

Also, a Metroid Online with Mii support and Wii Speak would be a blast.

It could be done. But it's not a matter of cleaned up visuals. It's finding what the expanded audience would like in an FPS.

A big one is to not over-complicate things. Limit it to the essential controls, and make them intuitive. These people are looking for a fun game with their friends or to relax after work. They don't need a tutorial telling them how to press all the buttons.

Personally, I would try with a TPS, in the mold of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers comics (in the mold of, so I don't have yellow peril villains). And make it not take itself too seriously.

I would say the closest game I know to that are the Ratchet & Clank games, just that the controls and gameplay are still a lot to get into for the expanded audience.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Steroid what are you doing up at this time?!

It'd be like Custom Robo. Customizable characters. Four armed, jet packing, tank treads, etc.. No humans means no violence. It'd cross over into the real world, too. Board games, breakfast cereal, cartoons, action figures.

Really, it Nintendo went this route, whatever they came up with would be 10 times better. Trust me.

I think part of the problem with making a FPS is that the conventions for the genre are very well established. Messing with those conventions too much risks alienating the very people you are trying to sell to and I don't think Nintendo would be satisfied by just making a "me too" FPS.

The FPS market is as saturated as can be. I think that's the definition of a red ocean market.

GoldenEye and Halo, Metroid Prime already did a lot that could be done.

There's a reason why Nintendo couldn't make a blue ocean 3D Mario(they tried it with Galaxy, check the Iwata Asks interviews).

A lot of people get dizzy, and it's that simple. In terms of FPS I'm not sure how that would work, there's a core problem that can't be solved easily.
