Forums - Sales Discussion - Uncharted in the UK

Maybe it is because I saw 3 Xbox adverts in the last 3 minutes.... {make that 4, another as I write}

But seriously, M$ invest loads in advertising, and it is really cheap here, so the 360 is much stronger than the PS3. Most PS3 owners are more casual, with the most popular games being FIFA and PES

To be honest most of my friends own PS3's
I dont really know that many people with 360's.

Had it not been for this site i would have thought the 360 was a flop in the UK.

Oh I am very sorry I knew that its somewhere around the 50-60 Million range. I just remembered the numbers which I learned about 17 years ago in the 3rd class. That has nothing to do with ignorance. I took the 50 Million because It was easier for me to do the calculations. So even with 60 Mio It wont change much I just took rough estimations for all countrys.

Sorry, wasn't having a go at you.  Just that a lot of people ignorantly assume England is the UK, and the population of England is around 50m.

Well everytime I hear a woman complain about men playing computer games it seems that they always say 'Oh it's Xbox's fault' or 'I know he'll turn on the Xbox by the time I'm at the end of the road when I'm out the door'. If I based it on my friends then more of them I know have PS3s (who mostly had PS2s and Gamecubes last gen which were the two I got) but as a sales nerd I know that Xbox has a stranglehold here now over PS3 so as a Wii60 owner I'm quite happy to see more space in game shops for Xbox and Wii stuff. :)

So how can a £250 console outsell the 360 by 80K - 100K each week and even with its lauch price it still outsold 360 on some weeks and was the second biggest console lauch in the UK in UK PS3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>360

Because it's the UK. They aren't big on the Playstation brand so games releasing for the ps3 are destined to sell low #.

wrong. it is big in the uk. just the xbox brand is bigger

Hmmm... don't think so. I mean, you're right, the xbox is a bigger brand but the ps3 is in last place for that market. And by quite a large margin at that. This is why I say it's a not-so-big brand. Comparisons show it to be a no show.

Just think of it this way:

The morbidly obese human is still small in comparison to Gabe Newell.

the ps3 is further behind the 360 in the US than it is in the UK.... you are wrong. and even in 3rd place is has still sold a healthy amount and more than a few other european countries....

I don't understand why I'm wrong. The ps3 is still nowhere near as prevalent as the 360 in the UK, thus it's games are less likely to stay on top of the chartz...

Erm..

UK sales:

Platform         This week                                Total

55,521 (+95%) 3,862,156

32,571 (+21%) 2,502,624

Per capita UK destroys most other countries including US for video games, but Australia competes fairly well also, 1/3 population and roughly 1/3 - 1/4 of sales.

As for Uncharted, it's a success, not every game needs to sell Halo or COD level of sales. Uncharted 1 sold about 250k in UK including budget release, I think Uncharted 2 should sell 300k+ fairly easily in UK.

It's not all that great, but it's acceptable for UK at least.

I see in the UK chart thread that Assassin's Creed 2 sold onl 12% more than the original! Why no threads on this? This is the real bomba! New IPs are always far less frontloaded than their sequels, but despite having a massive userbase advantage and a previous fanbase this game sold only 12% more!

I think that's a pretty bad opening for Ubisoft in the UK at least, but I think there are 2 explanations why this game may have decent sales after the first week:

*1 - The original game was extremely hyped, but critically flawed, despite being a new IP it had massive week 1 sales (I believe the highest ever for a new IP). The second game is actually critically acclaimed and is said to have fixed the flaws from the first game, but people may be put off from the first game. Word of mouth may give this game better legs than your typical massive holiday sequel release.

*2 - It released a week after COD6! After seeing unprecedented sales in the UK the week before surely COD6 stole a hell of a lot of potential video game disposable income from every other game including AC2 the following week. Whilst this may be an immediate disadvantage, it also meant most other big games were delayed to Q1 2010. AC2 could actually benefit from only competing with games in other genres this holiday season.

COD6 dropped 86% from it's crazy first week sales in the UK, if AC2 can manage a 50% drop I think it will be doing fine into the holiday season, 60% is ok, but not so good, 70% and I think Ubisot could have big problems in the UK at least.

I'm really interested to see AC2 drop off in UK next week, I think it will tell us a lot about how realistic Ubisoft's revenue forecasts are for this fiscal yaar.

erm why are you showing just one week? why not shows the sales for the past 10 weeks? this week the 360 was bound to outsell ps3 with heavy advertising on modern warfare 2.
